When I first heard about Nier from Square-Enix, I was intrigued. I wondered at what new type of games we could expect from the Final Fantasy giant. Maybe a new franchise or something the like. Yes you read the headline correctly, Final Fantasy I and II are both coming to the iPhone! With the movement for Mobile devices becoming a gaming force to be reckoned with, we are seeing the larger games quickly making their way into our hot little hands. Square Enix announced on it's Facebook page as well as on Twitter that it would be releasing the first two Final Fantasy titles for the iPhone and iPod Touch. No, unfortunately, this does not mean that Daniel Day Lewis will be abandoning his child (abandoning his boy), and being a gracious oilman on our next generation consoles. Nay, this deals with the blood that will be spilled via two downloadable titles coming this Wednesday on XBox Live and PSN. Death by Cube (800 ($10)) is a little gem by Square Enix with a story that suggests a sweet abundance of man's most precious videogame resource, violence, "Leo is a robot, one who awakes to find that he has lost his memory. All he knows is that he must reboot the heroine robot, so he sets forth on a mission hoping to regain his memory. Don't Panic! I've always wanted to start off with that. But as it says, don't panic. There has not been an announcement of a delay, set back or some other event to hindering Final Fantasy XIII from dropping on time. It is just a reference from the new trailer below. For once the characters of the story actually see how everything is happening in a string of bad luck. Well, the beta test application site for Final Fantasy XIV has opened up, and while the beta may only be for the PC, it is a great chance for those interested to poke around in what could be a fantastic MMO experience. For the curious, the requirements are: Be at least 18 years of age Possess a Square Enix ID account (Register for a Square Enix ID account here, if you don't have one already) Possess an internet connection Be capable of downloading large amounts of data Be capable of submitting bug reports in either Japanese, English, French, or German Like any other beta test, there will be several waves and opportunities to enter the beta so don't be discouraged if you don't make it in initially. So we were all promised a big announcement from Square Enix about Final Fantasy XIII today (11/13/09). I'm sure we all figured it would drop out to us sometime later in the day. Ok pervert, I know what you thought when you first clicked in here. No, boning animals is not going to be in Final Fantasy XIV. It still got you to look in here to check out the shots of the creatures that you will be slaying in the game. So technically you will be giving them the bone, but not in the legal issue way that you may have been thinking. So there. Nier,or Nier Gestalt as it goes by these days, is one of those titles that I really feel could go either way. It could be a really compelling experience with a narrative that draws you in with some really deep action elements, or it could be a largely forgettable title with little to allow it to stand out among other similar entries in the genre. The design of the game is decidedly Square Enix and if we have learned anything from their protagonists, there will be a rich melencholy right below the surface of the gruff devil may care attitude.
