E3 2011 Impressions: XCOM
by Brian Bentley [ Thursday, 16th of June 2011 - 06:13 PM ]
At last year’s E3, when I saw XCOM, I was loving the environments, the time period and the promise of strategic elements. What I was iffy on was the generic-feeling action game play. A year has passed and I walked into the 2K Games booth to see what progress 2K Marin has made on this re-imaging of the beloved franchise. This year the focus of the demonstration was the strategic aspects of combat in the field and the importance of decisions made through the course of the game. Everything is a factor – from choosing your mission, to who accompanies you on the mission, to how you tackle each scenario you encounter in the field. Read More...

E3 2011 Hands On: Twisted Metal
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Tuesday, 14th of June 2011 - 08:56 PM ]
So it has been a year since the new Twisted Metal was announced at E3 during the Sony press conference. It seems like it would be a good time to check in and see what the designers over at Eat Sleep Play have been doing since then. Yes there have been some fun new trailers and game play footage, but that doesn't give one a good feeling of how the game would handle. For that you need to place hands to controller. It was extremely fitting that the first location to get my godly hands on the game was in the arcade set up immediately after the Sony conference. Read More...

E3 2011 Impressions: Torchlight II
by Brian Bentley [ Monday, 13th of June 2011 - 11:34 PM ]
When I stumbled upon Torchlight during 2009’s E3, I knew I had found something special. Of all the games I came away wowed by during that show, Torchlight was definitely one that stood out in my mind after the buzz wore off. Fast forward to 2011, as Runic Games attempts to make a repeat performance at E3 with Torchlight II. At first glance, you will feel a familiarity with Torchlight II. The art style hasn't changed dramatically, though they seemed to have spruced up some of the textures. Read More...

E3 2011 Impressions: BioShock Infinite
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Monday, 13th of June 2011 - 09:34 PM ]
Hidden deep in the back of the 2K Games booth in the South Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center, we were led into a room that looked like an old hunter's club room - Animal heads on the walls, old fashioned lamps lighting the room and filled wall to wall with plush leather couches. It was as close to an opening in reality to take a step into Columbia (where Bioshock Infinite takes place) as I could imagine without Elizabeth opening a tear and pulling us through. Before I get into the bulk of the game footage we were shown, which consisted mostly of sky rail combat, let me catch some of you up on the story that is the lead up as well as the background. This is for those just now finding interest in the game. Read More...

E3 2011 Impressions: Luigi's Mansion 2
by Brian Bentley [ Monday, 13th of June 2011 - 03:37 PM ]
During the Nintendo E3 Press Conference, before the ooo’s and ahhh’s of the Wii-U unveiling and videos, there was the announcement of a sequel of the much maligned Luigi’s Mansion to be made for the Nintendo 3DS. While Luigi is often the forgotten, second fiddle, there have always been the defenders of the faith who hold true to the green overalls. With Luigi’s Mansion 2, Nintendo hopes to capture a new audience through the portable platform to formulate a new, bankable franchise. Let’s face it; the original Luigi’s Mansion on the Nintendo GameCube received a bad rep. Read More...

Finally Some Prototype 2 Screens
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Thursday, 12th of May 2011 - 06:07 PM ]
Maybe it is just me, or because we are still a year out from launch, but the visuals for Prototype 2 don't seem to be going the way most sequels go. Usually there is some insane boost or extreme change in how things look. From the below screen I'd swear that they were take straight out of the first game. Not that it is a bad thing, but a little unexpected. I do have to say that some of these shots do have me raring to go back and play the original Prototype just because of how much fun I originally had. Read More...

Some Heavenly Sword 2 Information?
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Tuesday, 10th of May 2011 - 06:01 PM ]
It is hard to believe it has been almost four years since Heavenly Sword hit the PS3, but it has been. It was an amazing game even though its sales were not overwhelming. I'd blame that on the rocky launch of the PS3 and the titles that had been pushed out for said launch. Who'd want to waste $60 on a new IP made specifically for the infant system at the time. Well this guy for one. The game ended leaving a want for a sequel from Ninja Theory. Read More...

Review: Portal 2
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Tuesday, 19th of April 2011 - 10:02 PM ]
So here we are again, apparently only a few months after the events of Portal (assumed from in-game interactions). Still trapped in Aperture Science. Still being tested. But importantly, Still Alive. Alive and needing a final escape from the insane AI running the facility that is now hell-bent on enacting revenge for what Chell did in the first game. Along the way making a few surprising friends to help your escape and mastery of all the Science that was going on. There is really no way to simplify the story without giving spoilers here. Capcom Taking A Shot At God Of War With Asura's Wrath?
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Thursday, 14th of April 2011 - 08:43 PM ]
I get that by now it is hard to do an action game without getting the "It's Like [Insert Name]..." tagged to it, but Asura's Wrath seems to not care. Not care to the point where the basic story of the game is thus. Once a revered deity, Asura was betrayed by his fellow gods and stripped of all his powers. Consumed by anger at the injustice he has suffered and swearing vengeance, Asura discovers he can use this fury to his advantage and turn it against his enemies. Sound REALLY close to the opening to God Of War II to me. Read More...

Command Come In... New Operation Raccoon City Game Play Trailer
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Thursday, 14th of April 2011 - 05:27 PM ]
It is in and it makes Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City look like a load of fun. The trailer also makes all of the screen shots look like there were originally working it out for the Wii. Granted, there are a lot of pre-rendered scenes in the trailer, but if you look fast, you can see the game play mixed in. From the looks of it, it looks to take RE: Outbreak and do what was originally intended for those games. Fast action and a bit of sneaking with a sprinkle of Zombies and B. Read More...

Falling To Your Death Issue Has Been Solved In Portal 2
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Wednesday, 13th of April 2011 - 10:00 PM ]
Doesn't it bug you in games when non-supernatural heroes or villains can fall from hundreds of feet and survive without rhyme or reason? Or for that matter, falling 20 feet almost kills them out right. It is a mix between realism and game play that designers have to take into account. Do you forgo realism in a major way for game play sake or do you try to fake it? Mix in the ability to portal hundreds of feet into the air, sometimes on accident, and now you have a real issue. But it looks like minds behind Portal 2 have the solution. Read More...

Duke Nukem Delayed Again: Much Shorter This Time
by Brian Bentley [ Thursday, 24th of March 2011 - 09:51 PM ]
Duke Nukem Forever being delayed again is like a nerd with a pocket protector - you know the joke, everyone knows the joke and the best you can muster is a half-hearted smile in one corner of your mouth in recognition the joke even existed. So, the fact 2K and Gearbox went with a more tongue-in-cheek approach to the announcement shows a true effort in good faith to the game and the franchise as a whole. June 14th is not that much longer to wait and I'm certain the extra time will be used wisely. Duke Nukem Forever will be released on XBox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Read More...

Prey 2 Live Action Trailer
by Corey Dockendorf [ Saturday, 19th of March 2011 - 07:57 PM ]
Bethesda Softworks announced this week Prey 2, and the teaser will make you think twice about putting your cell phone on airplane mode. Prey, which was released back in July of 2006, was originally developed by Human Head Studios. Prey followed the sci-fi adventures of Cherokee Domasi "Tommy" Tawodi. The general story was that he, along with Girlfriend and Grandfather, were beamed up to an alien ship known only as The Sphere. The Sphere has this whole Galactacus complex, as it devours all materials, living or inanimate from our tiny blue planet. Read More...
