Big announcements are happening at GDC every day but Nintendo surprised everyone when it announced a new collaboration with AT&T and its soon to be released Nintendo 3DS. During his keynote speech at GDC this morning, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata's informed everyone: "There is great potential to increase the number of people who enjoy video games by opening up new game-play opportunities that are only available through the use of 3D,” Iwata said. “Nintendo 3DS will be the most connected Nintendo device ever, with its ability to link people via local wireless connections, while at the same time connecting them to people and content worldwide via hotspot connectivity." So the 3DS is hitting shelves in just about a month. March 27th to be exact for you. Wouldn't it be nice to know if it is going to be worth a purchase out the gate? At least for those people who care to have a launch 3DS for gaming and not just to have bragging rights that they sat in line for over a week to get the very first one their local electronics store had. Today, Nintendo announced new holiday bundles to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. release on the NES. Going "Mario-red," the new Wii and DSi XL will each have Mario games bundled in with them to complete the experience. Nintendo also unveiled the new Wii-mote with the Wii Motion Plus technology built into the original frame. As if Nintendo didn't already control enough of the portable console market, they wanted to really push the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL handhelds this holiday season by reducing prices. Beginning on September 12th, the Nintendo DSi will drop to $149.99 and the DSi XL will drop to $169.99. The DS Lite will continue at the $129.99 price point. As always, the marketing team over at Nintendo of America (NOA) makes a brilliant move: drop the price of the DSi and DSi XL now in September in order to sell more units for Holiday 2010. With Gamescom 2010 getting into full swing with news and announcements, Nintendo decided they wanted to remind its consumers that they too have games coming out this fall and that you won't want to miss them. Two games in particular were given solid release dates. Kirby's Epic Yarn and Donkey Kong Country Returns were big hits at E3 this year and have been generating huge buzz for their impending arrival. Yesterday, Activision announced a new hardware bundle for Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo Wii. Goldeneye 007 is a polished up remake of the Nintendo 64 game of the same name. Revered by many, the original Goldeneye is widely considered the pioneer of console shooters and the harbinger of competitive multiplayer on consoles. Today, Virtual Play Games officially announced the release date of Intellivision Lives! on the Nintendo DS. Intellivision Lives! is a compilation game sporting over 60 games from the retro console's library. It's that time again where Nintendo rewards its faithful for liberally stuffing their corporate pockets full of money and doing free market research for them. Yesterday Nintendo released their Elite Rewards for 2010 in an email to Club Nintendo participants. Club Nintendo is a customer reward program. You purchase Nintendo products, register them on the Club Nintendo site and then you fill out a "brief" survey to earn coins that may be redeemed for prizes. Since then I have been pouring over the many pictures I snapped - from the Activision Party to the Nintendo and Sony presser to everything else in between. I also managed to film some of the Method Man and Redman concert at the Konami booth. You may think it is all fun and games when you are at E3, and at times can be, but it is also a lot of hard work. It started with a rush of excitement from the crowd in the Nokia Theatre on Tuesday morning and proceeded throughout E3. A brand-new Legend of Zelda was coming to the Nintendo Wii. Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the Wii Motion Plus-based adventure fans have been clamoring for since the little white box’s inception. Not much of the story has been released for Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but judging by the reaction at the Nintendo Press Conference and how long people were willing to wait in line to experience the brief demo at E3, that is not a concern…yet.
