Aperture Science Has Ramped Up The Tests
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Sunday, 4th of July 2010 - 06:17 PM ]
I remember way back when I first cracked open my copy of Portal on my PC. Yes I cracked open a copy of a digital download, because it fits my nostalgia. I remember enjoying each level of the game that lead up to the big showdown with GLaDOS and finding out that the cake was indeed not a lie. I got a piece when I was done and it was delicious and easy to wash down. I also remember how much fun it was that the whole game was kept simple and each level was pretty much a tutorial leading up to the final showdown. If you disagree, then you have not truly played Portal. Read More...

Review: Alien Breed Impact
by Corey Dockendorf [ Tuesday, 22nd of June 2010 - 10:53 PM ]
Alien Breed: Impact is a nostalgic nod to the classic top down arcade style shooter. Players take on the role of Conrad, a systems engineer who when it comes to weapons is a jack of all trades. If it shoots, blows something up or catches something on fire, you can bet that good ol' Conrad knows how to use it. Your ship is under attack by a swarm of Aliens and you will delve deep into the ship shooting anything that moves in an attempt to regain control. To keep things moving, at the beginning of every level you receive a cut-scene in the comic-book panel format filling you in on the story, along with full voice overs by individual characters. Valve Announces Portal For Free
by Brian Goodman [ Friday, 14th of May 2010 - 04:40 PM ]
In celebration of the delayed release of Valve's popular digital distribution platform on the Mac, it has been announced that until May 24th you can download the 2007 cult hit Portal for free on either PC or Mac. If you're like me and refused to buy the Orange Box when it came out because it forced you to buy two games you already bought, but STILL love the brilliant blend of flawless mechanics, dark humor, and perfect pacing of Portal, this is great news. If you are one of the three people reading this who haven't played through arguably the best three-plus hours of gaming ever, now you have no excuse. Also posted is this hilarious ad (seen below) to promote the free release. Read More...

Review: Beat Hazard
by Brian Bentley [ Monday, 26th of April 2010 - 06:26 PM ]
A combination of the best of what you love about Geometry Wars, Asteroids and Audiosurf, Beat Hazard is a rocking hand-eye coordination / spatial recognition challenge. Developed and published by Cold Beam Games, the game takes the music already stored on your computer and turns it into a space shooter. Big on gameplay, Beat Hazard makes no pretense regarding the presence of a story. Rather, it absorbs the drama from the song and builds your world from that palette. Read More...

Macs R Dead
by Kevin [ Thursday, 11th of March 2010 - 12:45 PM ]
I think everyone saw this coming at some point. When you have a game series with such wide appeal as the Left 4 Dead series, the need to push it out to other platforms becomes fairly obvious. Though I suspect that at some point we will see this game make its way to handhelds in some form or another, this announcement deals with Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 shuffling its zombie feet to the Mac OSX through the glory of Steam for the Mac. For those who are curious, the L4D Team discuss what exactly this means for you: "Steam on the Mac will behave just like Steam for Windows, but through Steam Play will add cross-platform ownership. That means if you own Left 4 Dead 2 for Windows, then you already own it for the Mac. Read More...

The Cake Is Truly A Lie, But Portal 2 Is Not
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Saturday, 6th of March 2010 - 11:18 PM ]
It's been a long time coming, but it is finally here. Portal 2 has been announced. Announced via the latest edition of Game Informer as a twelve page article and featured on two different covers for this edition. You can see the images below. Not too bad to look at, but you will have to get the magazine to get more details as of right now. Or you could pop on over to the GameStop site and scope out these details listed under the PC description for the pre-order. A description that states there is going to be a full new cast of characters, a load of new puzzles, much larger puzzles as well, and multiplayer/co-op modes in the game. Read More...

Steam Coming To Mac?
by Corey Dockendorf [ Thursday, 4th of March 2010 - 04:48 PM ]
With the Game Developers Conference just a short ways away, and Valve revving everyone up for their "Big Announcement," little has been left to the imagination about what this announcement could be. Images have been surfacing from multiple sites who had received images displaying Valve characters in very "Apple like" commercials. I have attached some of the images for your viewing pleasure. A very cool 1984 throwback featuring Alyx from Half-life 2 (via Macworld) Gordon freeman rocking the Apple look (via Macrumors) Check out the rest from MacNN, Rock, Paper, Shotgun and Eurogamer The folks over at the Steam community forums have been data mining the latest client software Beta release and have stumbled upon graphic images for Mac buttons, an osx. Steam Achievements Added to Torchlight
by Brian Bentley [ Wednesday, 23rd of December 2009 - 04:35 PM ]
We, as humans, are a competitive, goal-oriented species.  The category of humans known as gamers are characteristically more so.  So when little goals outside of the main game play were created on platforms this console generation (Achievements on Xbox 360 and Steam, trophies on the PS3), gamers took to them with a ferocity only matched by the public's outrage to the release of Coke 2.  The obsession with achievements has grown to the point that people will go out of their way to grind away for hours, simply to have the tiny extrinsic award.  As a bit of an afterthought and most likely a reward to the fans, last week Runic Games released over 60 achievements that may be earned on Steam for their critically acclaimed action-RPG Torchlight. Is Digital Distribution the Future?
by Ben Brody [ Tuesday, 10th of November 2009 - 02:51 AM ]
It's fairly safe that we can all assume that the future of movies and game sales is digital distribution. How long the duration will be for it to take over is anybody's guess. It will be more determined by the willingness of people to download a game as opposed to having a physical copy than anything else. Delivery systems like GameTap, Direct2Drive and most notably Steam, have been digitally distributing PC games for years and have been met with success. It seems as though PC players are more willing to buy digital distribution than their console counterparts -- maybe because it's been available longer and they feel more comfortable with it or maybe it's because they don't care about having a physical copy since they can not trade it in anyhow.
