If you've been hoping to get more Avatar in your life, even outside of the planned sequels that are coming, then it is time to get hyped up as it looks like there is a new video game in the works for the franchise. It has just been announced that Massive Entertainment has partnered up with all the players of the franchise and will be developing a game based on the universe. Not only that, but the game will be using the most recent version of the Snowdrop Engine that made The Division look so nice to bring all of this to a PS4, Xbox One, or PC near you. Can you imagine how the world of Pandora from Avatar could look using this technology and expertise?
Now that you have had some excitement, it's time to bring it back down as this is only an announcement for a game to take place in the Avatar universe. There isn't even a working title to throw out there but it is coming and aims to expand on the film's universe in some way or another. Given the team involved it could be more of an open-world style of game like The Division, but that is just making a few assumptions at this point. Would we even want and MMO/Open World version of Avatar or something a little more defined given the focus on story that those involved want to tell? I guess we will see…
Massive, Lightstorm And Fox Interactive Team Up For A Game Based On Avatar Universe
Massive is behind the creation of Tom Clancy’s The Division, which last spring broke multiple records in the games industry, including the record for the industry’s best-selling new game franchise in an opening week. They are now working on a new AAA-project based on Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time. Four sequels to Avatar are currently in development, and Lightstorm, Fox Interactive and Massive are working together to create a game that, along with the films, will continue to expand and deepen in the Avatar universe in exciting and innovative ways.
“James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment changed the way we think about immersive storytelling with the first Avatar. The ambition that they have for the forthcoming films and this game is really inspiring,” said David Polfeldt, Managing Director at Massive Entertainment. “It’s a privilege to work with them and we’re honoured that they’ve entrusted us to create an experience worthy of the Avatar name.”
Cameron and Lightstorm entered this partnership after viewing an early game prototype that the team at Massive created using its proprietary Snowdrop engine. Snowdrop is a tailor-made, custom game engine that enables the creation of ultra-realistic game universes, enhanced by dynamic global illumination, stunning real-time destruction and an incredible amount of detail and visual effects. Along with being the engine behind the development of The Division, the Snowdrop engine is also the lead engine on a number of other unannounced Ubisoft projects.
“What impressed me about Massive were the group’s passion for this project and the power of its Snowdrop engine,” said Cameron. “I believe Ubisoft’s team at Massive Entertainment are absolutely the right partners to bring the beauty and danger of Pandora to life.”
How do you feel about the announcement of an Avatar game in the vein that it could be here? Do you think it will be something truly on its own or will it be forced to fit into the films in some way or another? Do you see it working more as an MMO or could we get a more defined path to follow as well as a solid story? Let us know down in the comments and then discuss. Once we get more on this new Avatar video game, we will have it all here for you. Be sure to keep checking in as it seems like there is no rhyme or reason as to when all of this will come to light. Hopefully soon.
