Hellblade
The latest developer diary for Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has dropped and this one goes into a bit more detail on how Hellblade's combat system has been upgraded
We've seen how lifelike the characters in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice are going to look when it comes to all of the motion capture. That was quite a feat that Ninja Theory has pulled off so far so there is a lot more scrutiny going to come their way to make sure the whole game is top notch. To accommodate all of this it looks like they have taken to reworking the combat system for Hellblade a bit and now we have a partial update on how that is all going with their latest developer diary. The transparency here has been spectacular.
As it seems the original combat system for Hellblade was designed around a directional combat system. Senua would lunge and attack in the direction she was facing and go after the enemy in said space. You can see it in action just below as well in some of the past developer diaries that have been pumped out. It looks like it works but as it would seem it didn't pair up with all of the other movements and actions in the game. They saw this and knew our scrutiny would as well so it looks like it was all changed just to make everything as fluid as we could want.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice — Combat Revisited
Of course all of this looks just about the same here to me as it is a behind the scenes look at how Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice will be handling combat. When I hear free form I tend to think along the lines of the Arkham series for combat and this doesn't look to be just that either. It does help that the talent they were able to secure for the animations here have some serious chops to lend and it is exciting to hear that Ninja Theory was able to go from nothing to full animations in a day for two of the bits of combat. Their small team needs successes like this and I hope they keep flowing.
Seeing as this is only part one of the Hellblade combat system I am certain we are going to get to see everything working in full form here soon. That does seem to be how they are releasing these videos and I have full faith that they are going to nail it on the head. So far the combat system in any of their titles has let me down and I think Hellblade is just going to add to that growing success.
What do you think about the new combat system here for Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice? Does it fit the way you were thinking it would or will it be going down a drastically different path than you were hoping for? What do you think the final form of the combat will feel and look like? Let us know your thoughts and discuss in the comments below. For all things Hellblade be sure to stay right here as we will bring you everything we can as we get it.
