I personally think this is an awesome move that will have a short term loss, long term gain for Microsoft (who has finally released one of my favorite IP's), as well as Smith and Tinker - a new developer who has taken the reins for Mechwarrior 5. There are no profits to be found by doing this, but what they will get is the love and respect of the huge Mechwarrior fanbase. In addition to the possibility of recruiting new fans who may have never dipped their toe into the very inviting waters of the Mechwarrior universe. I'm talking the inner sphere, the clans, the houses Katrina and Steiner and don't forget awesome giant robots that shoot lasers.
As a LONG time Mechwarrior fan, I have been drooling over MW5 screens for a while and it will be a ton of fun to play through MW4 again (and dust off my USB joystick). Did I mention awesome giant robots that shoot lasers?!
