The people down at Nintendo of America have squashed any notion of a slow-down or over-saturation of the portable device market. Like I mentioned before, people love special editions, especially if they think they are snagging something limited or unique amongst their friends. People will also jump all over the opportunity to get "more than $20" in "pre-loaded software." What these individuals do not realize is that many of these titles are overpriced and overvalued -- just like the DSi itself. So, consumers will pay the $170 price tag for a perceived value that isn't really there. DSiWare is clearly struggling after Nintendo extended the "get 1000 DSiWare points" deal they had at launch and now the inclusion of software on newly sold DSi's.
This is not to say that the Nintendo DSi does not have its merits. The cameras and interactivity, as well as the ability to download software from the DSiWare Shop, make this device a step in the right direction. This move continues to show Nintendo's prowess in the marketing arena. They are demonstrating to parents, who may have been a little tentative before in purchasing DSiWare, that nothing is to fear from downloading content. They see their children at play with the software and then it becomes nothing to approve the purchase of the next piece of DLC on the DSiWare Channel*.
So, there you have it, another holiday shopping season and another huge success the Big 'N' will take to the bank. Looks like once again, everything's coming up Nintendo.
