We have five releases this week across the three platforms. The lone Virtual Console title, Last Ninja 2, is from the Commodore 64. I am not familiar with this title as I did not have a C64, so this could be great buy for those of you with the nostalgia for it. Unfortunately, it still comes with the 500 Wii Points price tag, which is still too expensive comparatively to other 500 Wii Point games.
The Wii Ware titles this week show some promise. You, Me, and the Cubes is a physics-based puzzle game where the object is to place the people on the cubes to reach a certain number on each cube while balancing them on those less-than-sturdy objects. They do use the phrase "dozens of single-player stages," making me wonder whether or not you're getting your 1,000 Wii Points worth in your purchase. The other title Family Tennis by Aksys Games. They are not clear on the usage of waggle in playing tennis against up to four players or how this is improved over WiiSports tennis, but for 500 Wii Points, you may not go wrong with this little download.
Lastly, we look upon DSi Ware. There were two releases this week, neither of which is necessarily a quality showing. Clubhouse Games Express: Strategy Pack is a collection of five mini-games, which look like includes classics like backgammon, connect 4 (in this case, 5), othello and 2 others. Other than 'meh' I don't know what to say to this title. You can play Othello and Backgammon on the Atari 2600, though not as portable. The other title is MySims Camera. For those of you who follow my columns on Nintendo DLC know my feelings on licensed apps for the DSi. This is no exception. It is a simple application where you can bring MySims characters into using your camera. Not quite as bad as the calculator or the clock, the camera application should have been a free download for those that pre-order the next MySims game on the DSi or available pack-in. Please do not give Nintendo and EA $2 for this.
One last note, Nintendo is still offering a free 1,000 DSi Points to people who purchase a DSi by October 5th. Yes, the DSi is still too expensive, but it's a free $10 worth of points for those of you who purchased one. This was a good call by Nintendo in an attempt to push for a pre-Holiday season rush and get people to waste those points on frivolous application like the MySims Camera app.
Beware of falling objects and soaring imaginations with this week's new downloadable game offerings from Nintendo. The WiiWare service welcomes the precarious puzzle action of You, Me, and the Cubes and the court-storming antics of Family Tennis. Commodore 64 favorite Last Ninja 2 arrives on the Virtual Console, pushing players to heroic heights in a classic martial-arts adventure. Nintendo DSiWare users can let the chips fall where they may with Clubhouse Games Express: Strategy Pack or create imaginative pictures with MySims Camera. Another heads-up for Nintendo DSi fans: Consumers can still receive 1,000 bonus Nintendo DSi Points by purchasing a new Nintendo DSi game system and connecting to the Nintendo DSi Shop by 11:59 p.m. Pacific time on Oct. 5, 2009.
