The Pines Has Us Wandering Through Some Bizarre, New Gameplay

Pines

Horror title, The Pines, offers up a new look at the gameplay and world that we can expect out there in The Pines

It looks as if it is time to head into a new and dark wooded area, with some new gameplay that we have for The Pines. A new psychological horror title for the PC that Studio Abattoir has been working on for a bit, and now we get to see more of that gameplay after a bit of a wait. A bit of gameplay that shows off how this RPG, of sorts, will allow for all of our choices to come about and mean something out there in The Pines. Not to mention, something that will make us all question our own sanity and that of our characters as we watch the events play out. If that sounds like something that is your flavor of fun, then kick back and get ready to see what this one has for us in the latest footage.

All of that sanity talk for The Pines will make a bit more sense once you see the latest video that we have for the game. This is a title that places you in the shoes of a detective who is on a bit of a break after some dark things that go down. They are then encouraged to head out to the titular retreat spot to get some help to recover. As they always do in horror settings, The Pines are not exactly what they all seem. That or our detective has truly cracked, and things are even worse in their head. Not to mention that if we make the wrong choice or say the wrong thing, the person we were once talking to might snap as well and be the next person to try to soak up our weapon blows and resources along the way. All of it looks and feels like another Alan Wake kind of thing, just with everything being more in our character's head than something truly supernatural. Then again, I could be seeing things completely differently in the mix of things.

The Pines — Gameplay

A Psychological Horror RPG where every choice has a consequence.

After a case went cold, former detective Edward Walker is exhausted and desperate for peace. His therapist advises him to travel to The Pines, a secluded retreat that promises quiet, recovery, and therapists on site. It seems like the perfect place to leave his troubles behind.

It isn’t. Beneath its calm exterior, something is deeply wrong.

Explore a handcrafted world filled with secrets, conspiracies, and uneasy residents. Gather evidence, uncover the truth behind the retreat’s carefully maintained facade, and shape not only Edward’s story, but the lives of those around him.

Features:

  • A fully handcrafted open world filled with secrets, stories, and conspiracies.
  • Branching dialogue and meaningful choices that shape both Edward’s journey and the lives of The Pines’ residents.
  • A unique Stalker System. Say the wrong thing, cross the wrong person, or dig too deep, and a resident who once seemed harmless may return as a stalker, haunting you throughout the forests of The Pines.
  • Investigate like a detective. Gather evidence, connect clues, and decide who to trust.
  • Fast, fluid, and tactical combat. Dodge, parry, and strike at the right moment.
  • A deep skill and perk system to shape the way you play.
  • Scavenge for weapons, clothing, and useful items to survive your time in The Pines.

Do you like the look and feel of what we have here for The Pines, and does it seem to be giving us a different spin on a winning formula? Will this turn out to be something truly supernatural in the world, or could this all be a mental break that we get to play out in real time? Will every character in the game be subject to the "Stalker System," or will only a few key characters be triggered by saying or doing the wrong things? Let us have that discussed in the comments below. I know I am intrigued by what The Pines has to offer so far, so I will be keeping a better eye on the game. Not to mention that I would like to see it land on the consoles as well. To join that journey, just keep coming back to the website and follow along on all of our social channels to see when that all goes live for you. I am sure you will be glad you stuck around.
