Rock Band Console?

If you had to only buy a fake instrument to plug into your TV to play Rock Band or Guitar Hero, would you? Just to be able to plug and play with out the worry have having to get a specific console or said console purchasing early rights to said game. Would that sale better than what the current generation is now? Josh Randall from Harmonix thinks that may be the way the music genre may head in the not to far off future.

In an interview with Videogamer.com, Mr. Randall alludes to how he thinks that the plug and play games seem like the way it could easily go for Rock Band 4 or Guitar Hero 7. Just like those "play over 5000 games on your TV" sets where all the content is in the controller itself and all you need is a plug to go into the VGA on the back of the TV. Sounds kind of ghetto to me, at least how I picture it, but it could also have some merit if done right.

"I think you could foresee a future where maybe you don’t even have a console," said Randall, speaking to VideoGamer.com. "Your instrument can have all these songs and you just plug it into your TV. I'm sure it [the genre] is going to start to move in weird ways that no-one’s even thought of yet."

I honestly don't know how I would feel if this became the case. Yes it would be nice to just buy a small kit and have all the songs and software right there on the instrument. My concerns would be DLC and price. How could you make it easily expandable without adding the need for memory cards or bulky hard drives. Not to mention that a good controller is now $70 or so. Add in the software and other features and these instruments could jump to about $100 or so a pop. Not too bad when you compare game price and controller price now. But I'm sure that you wouldn't be able to use the Rock Band 4 controller when Rock Band 5 comes out. IE: another $100 instead of just $50 for the game.

I guess we'll see. Here's the link to the interview.
