Mortal Kombat
The next expansion for Mortal Kombat 1 was announced at SDCC this year and is bringing us more classic Mortal Kombat features
Just as we speculated out there for you, the new update and cast of characters coming to Mortal Kombat 1 was shown off during SDCC this year. However, that was only the tip of the iceberg for it all with NetherRealm Studios coming out and giving us a lot more to experience on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC on September 24th. Sure, we are going to see some new DLC characters in the mix, but here we actually have the announcement of Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns as a full story expansion on top of the Kombat Pack 2 and one more massive feature coming back. We are finally getting full Animalities once more. Something that we have not had in a full way for almost three decades now. So, buckle up and let us dive into what is coming to us all with the latest trailer for the game.
The expansion story for Mortal Kombat 1 will see all of the cast of characters fending off what Titan Havik wants to bring to all of the new realms. As the name implies, that would be total khaos and the destruction of all that Lui Kang has rebuilt. Along for the ride and expanding the story will be Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor with their own new reasons for being out there too. Also, most likely, there will be a new run of Kameo characters coming back from other Mortal Kombat lines to fill things out and expand the universe to its full potential. There are still a whole lot of characters out there to pull from and add in, so we know this expansion will be rather robust for us all. Even if we are not looking at the various guest characters coming into the fight and how that might shift things about too.
In addition to the core Mortal Kombat characters listed above, this new expansion will also have Ghostface, the T-1000, and Conan The Barbarian added into the fight for some fun. All with the only way to get them is in the new Khaos Reigns bundle. Thankfully, Animalities will be added in as a free update so if that was your bigger concern after seeing all of this, then you can sit happy and know it will be there. Not just for the core cast of Mortal Kombat 1 either, as it has been confirmed that each of the guest fighters and Kombat Pack characters will have their own Animalities in the mix too. Have a look and see what was highlighted during SDCC this year and get excited to see all of this roll out in just a few more months. A very exciting time to be a fan of this IP again.
Mortal Kombat 1 — Khaos Reigns
Warner Bros. Games announced Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, a new expansion for Mortal Kombat 1 featuring the next phase in the genre-defining Story mode centered around peace and anarchy, along with the addition of Kombat Pack 2 including six playable characters. Developed by award-winning NetherRealm Studios, Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns is set to release digitally on Sept. 24 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
After repelling the invaders who endangered Fire God Liu Kang’s New Era of peace, Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns expands the story campaign with an all-new cinematic narrative. When a perilous threat arrives from an alternate timeline, led by the ruthless Titan Havik whose sole mission is to throw the realms into khaos, Liu Kang must rally his champions and put faith in his enemies to defeat this grave danger. If they fail, the New Era will be reduced to anarchy.
Adding to the growing roster of playable fighters, Kombat Pack 2 features returning kombatants Noob Saibot, voiced by Kaiji Tang; Cyrax, voiced by Enuka Okuma; and Sektor, voiced by Erika Ishii, all with unique backstories as part of the reimagined Mortal Kombat 1 Universe. As Sub-Zero, Bi-Han was the Lin Kuei’s ruthless Grandmaster, but his soul was stolen by Titan Havik to create the perfect henchman, Noob Saibot, who is now dedicated to fomenting anarchy. Born into the Zaki, one of the Lin Kuei’s many sub-clans, Cyrax became a martial arts prodigy with an independent streak and untamed desire to serve the clan on her terms, or not at all. Growing up immersed in Lin Kuei culture under the tutelage of her parents, Sektor becomes a master armorer, skilled warrior, and Sub-Zero’s most trusted lieutenant, committed to advancing the clan’s future at all costs.
Kombat Pack 2 also brings a new batch of guest fighters into the mix with Ghostface, the recurring identity donned by antagonists from the Scream horror movie franchise, voiced by Roger L. Jackson; T-1000, the liquid metal-based Terminator and deadly cybernetic assassin from the Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) film featuring the voice and likeness of actor Robert Patrick; and Conan the Barbarian, the towering warrior from the Conan the Barbarian (1982) film featuring the likeness of actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Additionally, Animalities, the fan-favorite finishing moves will be returning as a free content update for all Mortal Kombat 1 owners. Allowing characters to morph into their spirit animal to annihilate defeated opponents, Animalities can be performed by all playable fighters and will be available in conjunction with the Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns release. Furthermore, all owners of Mortal Kombat 1 will receive a free MK 95 Scorpion character skin, inspired by the original Mortal Kombat (1995) film, available today.
Starting today, those who own Mortal Kombat 1 can pre-order Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns Expansion on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for $49.99 and Nintendo Switch for $39.99, which includes the cinematic Story expansion and the six playable fighters within Kombat Pack 2. The Story expansion along with Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor will be available on Sept. 24. Ghostface, T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian will be released post-launch, with one-week early access provided to Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns owners. The Kombat Pack 2 is not available as a standalone character bundle.
I will say, it is a little odd to see that there will not be a way to get the Kombat Pack 2 if you do not pick up the Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns bundle. I know that some of these new characters are tied to the new story that is being told, but there is a massive part of the fan base that does not even play the game for the story. They just want the cool kills and extra options to use in the game. They will have some of that with the Animalities, sure, but locking off six new fighters and the possible Kameo characters for Mortal Kombat 1 to all of that seems a bit of a bad choice. Who knows though? I am just hopeful that we will see the T-800 as a Kameo character so we can further see that IP take over more of this one. They definitely have the Actor's license already secured, so it makes a bit of sense.
Are you excited to see what Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns will add to the full story or did you only want the new characters? How hard do you think it will be to pull off some of the Animality moves out there? How do you feel about the new voices and looks of the classic characters who will be joining this version of the fight? Head down to the comments to fight it all out and have a bit of discussion. We were also able to hold an interview with many of the team from Mortal Kombat 1, and we will have all of that added to the site along with the many other updates still to come. Please keep on checking back in for all of those updates and the many others we have down the line so you can keep up with all of the fun.
