So the demo started off with a quick overview of the first "mission" announced base on the film Moonraker. It is a more modern re-telling of the story from the film and is the first of six films that will be in the game's over all storyline. It was also let loose that even though the game will be coming out about a month before the new film, there is already plans for DLC based on the film and that it will be free. So there we have the general gist of what to expect out of the gate in terms of story for the game.
From there we moved into the core game play a little bit into the story of Moonraker. As soon as it began I was thrown back into the Golden Eye nostalgia that was tried for as mentioned above. There did seem to be more of a focus on stealth and gadgets ever more in this iteration of the Bond franchise, as it goes with games. Try thinking GoldenEye with a bit more of Metal Gear Solid mixed in. You need to stick to shadows more and rely on stealth take downs to move throughout. It is a bit odd that you can't drag bodies around to help with the stealth, but I guess that can be part of the challenge.
Later on in the demo they moved into a scene that was quite a bit more action packed as an alarm had been set off. This is where it felt more like just another FPS title although with a bit more of story action mixed in. Read that as it felt like watching an interactive movie being played where you have the control. It was actually quite a bit more thrilling than I remember any of the scenes from the coveted GE that everyone wants a Bond game to live up to. Including a little bit of QTE mixed in to play things out.
After that the demo concluded with an in game movie and a few more details on the multiplayer and extras for the game. Here they are in list form.
- Character models and Voice Acting will be all Daniel Craig. (That's the newest Bond to those who don't follow the franchise.)
- While Jaws and Hugo Drax were the only iconic villain shown in the demo it has been assured that others will be included as they announce further films.
- Multiplayer will be back and 4-player split screen.
- It was also asked if they were taking care to balance things like Odd Job's hat thrown in the MP and it was assured that they were not going to let that kind of unbalancing into this title.
I know there are lot of fans out there that don't think that they will be able to get it right again since the N64, myself included, but what I saw gave me quite a bit more faith. I also can't wait to see what other stories are going to be included into the overall narrative. I guess we will all see in the months leading up to October 16th when the game launches on the PS3, XBox and PC.
