The first day of PAX East started off on a bad foot with me forgetting the passes at my house. After trekking all the way back, my crew and I finally made it to PAX East. We took in all the sights, sounds and not too friendly smells and we headed on over to none other than the Mortal Kombat booth. After waiting for thirty minutes in line my friend Hovey, we got our eager hands on the new installment. We both decided to pick the new tag-team mode and have some fun. Hovey picked good old Sub-Zero and Kun-Lao while I chose Mileena and Nightwolf. After a few x-ray attacks, that are nothing shy of brutal, (Mileena takes her fans, folds them and jams them into the back of her opponents head and then proceeds to rip them out and jam them into their eye sockets. Sub-zero falcon punches his opponent in the stomach piercing flesh and muscle to reach his enemies stomach, which he then freezes solid and crushes) and a few moments of pure button mashing Hovey bested me by his quick reflexes and a swift kick to the face.
While playing this new installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise on the PS3 I felt right at home with the controls. They feel and act just like their Super Nintendo ancestors. Old and new fans alike are sure to love the game's controls. As for the features, we got to see some "Gore-tastic" Finishers, and a much needed move list that can be accessed anytime during the fight. We had the privilege of watching one of Scorpion's finishers. After the player put in a quick five button combo Scorpion proceeded to cut his opponent in half along the waist, cut his head off and then kick his chest sending him flipping upwards. Oh, but wait we're not done yet. Oh no. Scorpion then proceeds to cut his enemy's falling head in half where we see some brains, skull fragments and other goodies inside.
After Mortal Kombat the crew and I decided to head on over to the THQ booth and check out their upcoming shooter, Homefront. Homefront takes place in the near future where the Greater Korean Republic attacks the United States with an EMP blast and then invades. The game takes place a few years after the invasion as you take the role of a recently recruited Freedom Fighter. We got to play the first fifteen minutes each taking turns after one of us died. The controls will feel right at home with fans of the FPS genre and the graphics are nothing short of amazing. The only problem we had was with the sprinting which felt way too slow. It was as if we were running in slow motion. Other than that Homefront looks and plays magnificently.
Stay tuned for day two tomorrow.
