Mortal Kombat
New gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1 has debuted to show us how the Kameo system will work in Mortal Kombat 1
The moment many have been waiting for since the announcement for Mortal Kombat 1 is here. We have some actual gameplay to look at and some other updates to the game that was only speculation up to now. As one of the main highlights of the Summer Game Fest stream, it would make sense that NetherRealm Studios came out strong for this one. September 19th truly is not that far away and I know I still have many questions to ask about Mortal Kombat 1 before it hits the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC. Thankfully, we have some of them to dig into right now.
So, for starters, we have a look at the same storytelling style of gameplay we have seen for Mortal Kombat in the past. All use the better game engine for visuals and flow between stories into fights. Not a shocker as this seems to have been the industry standard after it debuted so long ago in this IP. Keeping with the story side of things, it does look like the ending of Mortal Kombat 11 is playing a part in this with Lui Kang but he has reshaped things in a different way. A full reboot of things where characters are quite a bit different in the mix. Like the fact that Sub Zero and Scorpion are now brothers and not enemies. That and Raiden is more of a monk coming into some power instead of an elder god. Nifty…
In the mix of this, and the gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1 you can see below, we have a bit more on the Kameo system too. Just as we speculated, it will be more of a call-in system for the game where we will select our main fighter and then our Kameo one. There will be some overlap between the rosters, so there can be a Sub Zero and Sub Zero team, but as it looks, the Kameo roster will be made up of characters from Mortal Kombat titles of the past. Then during a fight, we will be able to call them in for a small hit or combo extension. This is regulated to a little meter in the HUD and using the right bumper to summon them in. Akin to the environmental attacks we have seen in the past. Nothing new but something to shake up the matches a bit.

In addition to all of this for Mortal Kombat 1, we also have some confirmation on the Jean-Claude Van Damme front too. We all knew he was going to be a specific skin for Johnny Cage in the game, but now it seems like there is much more to it than that. In fact, it sounds as if they are going to fully recapture the actor in the game and have him also record all of the dialog lines for Johnny too. If that is only for the gameplay matches or the whole story of Mortal Kombat 1, that is still to be seen. For those that know their game lore, though, this is a massive thing for the studio to finally land and I know I am excited to see and hear all of it when the game launches.
How do you feel about the Kameo system just having past Mortal Kombat characters jump in for a quick hit or did you want it to be a tag-team system? Will we get to see any of the Kameo roster make it over as a full character in the game or will some of them leave us wanting more with the tease of them in the background? Will we get to see Jean-Claude play in the full story or will it just be a skin we see in matches and nothing more? Head down to the comment section and discuss all of that until we get the next round of updates. For more Mortal Kombat 1 news, please keep checking back here. We will keep it all coming to you as best as we can.
