If you were watching The Game Awards last night then you most likely saw the nice little tease for World War Z. Not the next film from Paramount, but the new video game coming to us from Saber Interactive. It is all set in the World War Z film universe, but other than that it does not seem to be linked to anything we have seen thus far. We already lived that story and do not need to go through it again in game form on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Also as the new film will not be out until 2019, we will have 2018 to dive in and have a good time killing more zombies. We all need more of that right?
So what is this World War Z experience if it is not a film tie-in directly? As it looks, it is a four-player cooperative game that will have us taking on missions around the globe for "reasons." I am hoping for more than just a "survive" reason but if done right, we will not need more than that. Especially as we will be deploying traps, setting up barriers, and then using the world to our advantage to win. All in the locations like New York, Moscow, and Jerusalem. Although the trailer we have here for World War Z does not make it seem like the environment is the best tool when it comes to how frail a dead body should be. Maybe that is the point as these are "super zombies" now? At least that would make sense as to the reasons that keep surviving.
World War Z — Reveal Trailer
Independent developer Saber Interactive has announced World War Z, a new four-player cooperative game inspired by Paramount Pictures’ blockbuster film franchise. Featuring massive swarms of zombies who rush their living prey, World War Z is in production for the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One and Windows PC.
“World War Z is a name synonymous with heart-pounding fear and action, and we’re excited to finally capture that energy in a fast-paced and gruesome experience crafted specifically for modern consoles and PC,” said Saber Interactive CEO Matt Karch.
World War Z’s co-op campaign focuses on unique survivor stories and missions around the globe, including New York, Moscow, and Jerusalem. Use traps, barriers and the environment strategically to stay alive while unleashing a storm of firepower with a variety of weapons on the unrelenting hordes of the undead.
“Saber has tons of experience working on high-quality games and they’ve done a great job capturing the massive, frantic hordes of ‘zekes’ that sets our franchise apart,” said Bil Bertini, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Licensing for Paramount Pictures. “They have created a fiercely original experience in the rich universe of World War Z that fans are sure to love.”
At first, I was a little "iffy" on the need for World War Z to be a game here. In an age where zombie shooters are everywhere, do we really need one more? Especially with all of the other major franchises out there that offer similar things. Maybe if World War Z offers couch co-op and not just online co-op it could find a good place in our hearts. Although as long as it stays out the realm of forced movie tie-in, it should be worth a look. Even if it all deviates from the source material that already deviated from the source material. Maybe to lefts can make a right. We will see next year I guess.
How do you feel about this World War Z game that we have incoming now? Do you think that Saber missed the right mark to release this or will it be a nice bridge between films and book somehow? Would this be a winner if it had couch co-op or will you be looking for an online co-op in the sea of all of the other ones out there? Let us know your thoughts on all of it down in the comments and then discuss. As more for World War Z is dropped, we will put it up here on the site. Keep checking back in to make sure you are not left in the dark for anything with this game.
