Evolve
We've seen Evolve become something amazing but it looks like Evolve will no longer be changing and evolving as future development ceases
If you thought that Evolve going free-to-play was an amazing thing and was going to bolster the player base back up to launch day proportions then you were…apparently wrong. At least that seems to be the case here as 2K Games has taken ownership of the game and Turtle Rock Studios will no longer be updating or tweaking the game from now on. This may or may not change in the future but as of now Evolve is stuck at Stage 2 and most possibilities of updates and Stage 2 coming to the PS4 and Xbox One are all on the back burners now. It looks like the F2P version will stay PC for now.
First, no Turtle Rock Studios is not out of business. No, Evolve servers are not being shut down. As of now it looks like the game and servers will stay active just as they are right now. They will also be most likely staying there from now on as well and the consoles may never see Evolve become F2P at all. Hopefully that isn't something you were hoping for as I don't think we'll see more work on the game as the following release kind of states that 2K is focused on getting the numbers up on the PC version first before moving on. Not something that will be easy to do as it has now been made stagnant and those extras to entice players back just won't be flowing.
Evolve Stage 2 Development Complete
It’s been four months since we began the Evolve Stage 2 experiment, and in that time the team at Turtle Rock Studios has worked tirelessly to improve and expand the experience. The result is the best, most complete version of Evolve ever. Today, Turtle Rock finishes development on the project and has transitioned day-to-day server operation to 2K, as we take the operation of the Evolve franchise fully in-house.
Evolve Stage 2 will continue to be free-to-play on PC and players can expect the in-game experience to remain the same, as we continue to experiment with the business model. We’ll also continue to evaluate the possibility of bringing the Stage 2 experience to consoles in the future, though right now our focus is on bringing in new players and maintaining the game’s audience on PC.
We’d like to thank Chris Ashton, Phil Robb, and the rest of the Turtle Rock Studios team that have poured their heart and soul into one of the most unique and heart-pounding gaming experiences this industry has ever seen. We couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished together with Evolve and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
Of course all of this is bad news for fans of Evolve as it will only be a matter of time before the servers are no longer seen as needed and shut down as well. Who knows how long that will be but that is just more of the sad side. The good side of all of this is that now this frees up Turtle Rock to look to the future and hopefully bring us yet another amazing title to get lost in. I will agree that Evolve was a massive endeavor and it may have been a bit too much for the payoff it did get but that doesn't deviate from the team being a group of great talent. Hopefully we'll see something just as unique here soon.
How does this new Evolve affect you in the long run? Are you sad that we may never get to see Stage 3 or even Stage 2 on the consoles or have you forgotten about the game already? Do you think that 2K will be able to truly bolster the PC player-base or is that just an excuse given to make us feel 'okay' about all of this? Give us your thoughts and discuss in the comments. If there is any further news on Evolve and its progress we'll have it up on the site here. Be sure to keep checking back in as you won't want to miss out on all of that if it does come.
