According to the short and sweet press release:
"Coming to the PC&Mac in 2011, DotA 2 promises to take the unique blend of online RTS and RPG action that has made DotA popular with tens of millions of gamers and expand upon it in every way." |
For those that don't know the name DotA comes from the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients. Defense of the Ancients at its core is a small tactical, hero based strategy game which completely revamped the Warcraft III game and design by bringing a real RPG aspect to an RTS world. This spawned a whole new community dedicated to modding Warcraft III and creating a whole new play style of gaming.
Well of course with such a large modding community you get a lot of variations of the most popular mods. A few of the most notable being DotA-All-stars as well some recent big budget free-to-play titles like League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth.
The all-stars mod is currently maintained by Icefrog who is well known in the DotA-verse, and was hired by Valve in 2009 (Coincidence? I think not). Now Icefrog is working with Valve on DotA 2, and revving up its (Steam?) engine for a 2011 release. Gameinformer.com has an exclusive hands on look with the title, and if you're a fan, I suggest you check it out.
