PAX 2009 Impression: Star Trek Online someone please stop the madness? Well I guess we cannot stop the train, but we can add a bit of flavor to the mix. The Star Trek franchise is now releasing their MMO called….that’s right, Star Trek Online. The many rumors about rather the game will come out and who will release it has been haunting this title for years. Well now that Atari and Cryptic have picked up the game, everyone in the Star Trek universe can now rejoice at the fact that they can have their own world to live in now.

The story takes place 20 years after the most recent Star Trek movie, where planet Romulus has been destroyed and the Federation is now helping the Romulans. The Klingons are not happy about it and now they look at the Federations as enemies. You are an ensign of Starfleet and your goal is to become a captain of your own Starfleet Ship, or you can be a Klingon and just destroy everything. You will play through your character as if you are part of a Star Trek episode, and there will be new episodes as DLC for the players to enjoy.

The game controls are relatively simple, except when you are in your Starfleet Ship. Your normal controls are how you move your ship up, down, left and right. The ‘R’ button controls your impulse speed. Your ‘Spacebar’ is how you fire your PHASERS and photon torpedoes. Your officers, depending on the skills available, can help you in the fight against any enemies in front of you, so you have one guy that can maybe load up multiple photon torpedoes, another to help control the ship shields, and so on.

Is this game for everyone? Maybe not, but it is not only for the Star Trek fans, but also for those who are Sci-Fi fans as well. Will I try this out? Probably, but this title won’t be out until maybe Q1 of 2010. Beam me up, Scotty.
