Winter Ember
A new stealth title, Winter Ember, has been announced and it looks like Winter Ember will be taking us back to the Victorian age
It is always fun when new stealth games sneak up on us and that is what we have here for Winter Ember today as it has a sneaky announcement for us to all experience and take in. Not only in the fact that the game was under wraps from Sky Machine Studios until now, but also in the fact that we have an announcement trailer to go with it that does not seem to be just what we would all assume the game to be. More so, as it is all in an anime style cutscene that does not show off just what Winter Ember seems to be. That is fine, given how the market usually goes, but it does make it hard for some of us to truly be able to get behind the games here Blowfish Studios. As if calling them out will help…
While you may not be able to tell from the announcement trailer for Winter Ember here, what we have is another stealth game in the same style of Thief. We will be stalking the streets as Arthur Artorias as he seeks out answers and revenge. Revenge in a Victorian city where he will bring along more than 30 specialty arrows that he can use to stalk the night. Arrows like a Water Missile to snuff out flames to bring more of the darkness around him. It really does sound like Winter Ember is a lot like many other titles the more I write this. Something that could be a great thing if they only use the parts of those games that worked well and leave the rest to the curb. Have a taste of what the game is going to be about just below with a few screenshots from the actual game that do not blend with the video well.
Winter Ember — Announce
Set in a Victorian-esque world, Winter Ember follows the story of Arthur Artorias, a faceless man in pursuit of answers and revenge. Returning after a near-decade of exile to the city of Anargal, where he was stripped of his family, fortune, and past, Artorias clashes with Greater Heaven, a tyrannical religious militant faction that has seized control of the town in his absence. To survive his homecoming, Artorias must rely on his wits and use the darkness to his advantage.
Infiltrate and explore vast Gothic sandboxes brimming with treasure and mysteries to uncover. Move quickly and quietly through the shadows while surveilling the environment, and peering around corners and through keyholes in search of lurking enemies and hidden passageways. In Winter Ember, there are multiple paths forward and solutions to every problem. Stalkers are rewarded for studying their surroundings and identifying less obvious modes of entry or egress.
Even when backed into a corner and seemingly forced to use a weapon, Artorias can evade combat by crafting one of more than 30 specialty arrows to escape the situation. Water missiles, for example, can douse flames and create dark new hiding spots in which to disappear.
What do you think about Winter Ember based on all of this here? Do you think that it is going to look and play a lot like those many other titles in the genre or will it be different enough to make it stand out on its own? What do you think the other arrow types will be and will they just be more deviations of what we have seen and heard before? Let us all know what you are thinking down in the comments and then feel free to discuss. For more on Winter Ember as we get it, be sure to stick close to the site here. We will keep them all coming at you as fast as we can.
