Groundhog Day
Relive the same day over and over with Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, which also furthers the Groundhog Day story all in a VR setting
It's Groundhog Day! Again… Well at least it will be when we get to play Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son with the Oculus, Vive, or PSVR systems later this year. It would have been amazing to see it drop on the actual day, but I am sure that there are good reasons as to why Tequila Works did not do just that. Outside of the day being a Saturday and we do not normally get games on Saturdays. Also seeing as we are just hearing about it, I am going to guess that it just was not ready to be placed out there for the masses. That will most likely be the best option to go with there.
All of that said, you might be wondering just what Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son actually is. It is a new VR puzzle game that places us in the shoes of Phil Connors Jr. That would be the son of Bill Murray's character from the original film. The game picks up 26 years after the events of Groundhog Day where Phil Jr. is now in Punxsutawney and reliving the same day over and over as well. All in a branching narrative form that will lead to different places once we figure out how to break the cycle and get back to life as normal. That or Phil learns the same lesson his father had to learn from before.
You can see the announcement teaser for Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son just below and get a feel for just how the game may play. It looks like nothing more than a walking sim with a smartphone, but this is just what we get to see for now. I have a feeling we will get a full array of things to do as we have to solve some kind of puzzles while restarting at the same place every morning.
Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son — Teaser
Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is a virtual reality adventure game to be released later this year on PlayStation Virtual Reality and other major VR platforms. With over 8 hours of hilarious puzzles and branching narrative gameplay, the story challenges you to think past today and break the time-loop cycle to escape into tomorrow.
In Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son you’ll play as the charming but arrogant Phil Connors Jr., who grew up in the shadow of his father—a man who spent a lifetime repeating a single day until he had made it perfect. But for Phil Jr., today is the worst day of his life. He’s trapped back home in Punxsutawney, the small town he thought he’d escaped, where he can’t even get a decent cappuccino—and he’s going to have to repeat the day over and over until he learns the true value of friends and family.
Did you ever expect to see a game based on Groundhog Day to ever come to market or does the loop fit in with gaming perfectly that it is shocking it took this long? Do you think that this will all be canon in terms of the film and its story or will it be its own fun thing to take in? What kind of puzzles do you suspect will be mixed in here or will it be the more basics with the narrative to drive things around? Let us all know what you are thinking down in the comments. When we have more to share for Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, we will share it all here. Just be sure to keep checking back in.
