The Evil Within 2
At E3 2017 The Evil Within 2 was officially announced with a lot of footage and gameplay, as well as The Evil Within 2's release date to look for
There is always so much going on at E3 that a few things fall through the cracks and The Evil Within 2 didn't fall through, but it fell into a list of titles that just was not able to get covered on the show floor. Bethesda announced it during their BE3 event out there and then had a small "experience" on the show floor but it was nothing more than what Tango Gameworks has already shown before; from what I am told. None the less The Evil Within 2 has been announced and is slated to come to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 13th. Yes, that is a Friday The 13th on top of all of that. Nice selection of dates there and let's hope that they can keep the date. For now, let's dive into what we know about the game at this point.
Outside of the platforms and date for The Evil Within 2, you'd think that were wouldn't be much more as we are still technically at an announcement state for it all. Thankfully though, there are a few things that could be gleaned from it all and one of them is the fact that the horror has been ramped up a bit. It needed to be as The Evil Within 2 is more or less and "open world" of sorts that also promotes exploration and will have its own side missions that will need to be completed to survive all of the other horrors. The reasons for all of that will be in the story of The Evil Within 2, and a bit lower down, but we are looking at a less linear version of the franchise than we had before. How that will play out could make or break it all as it did work for other titles in the past but the current state of horror has moved away from it all.
The Evil Within 2 — E3 Announce
You are Detective Sebastian Castellanos and at your lowest point. But when given a chance to save your daughter, you must enter a world filled with nightmares and discover the dark origins of a once-idyllic town to bring her back. Horrifying threats emerge from every corner as the world twists and warps around you. Will you face adversity head on with weapons and traps, or sneak through the shadows to survive? This is your one chance at redemption, and the only way out is in.
As for the story of The Evil Within 2, it will be its own contained thing so there isn't the need to force your way through the previous title to be able to enjoy the sequel. That's a good idea from Tango Gameworks, but I am sure that playing the past title will have its bonuses here. Especially since it takes place three years after the previous title and there are a few character ties and story elements that could feel out of place without all of the other back story. Like the relationship between Sebastian and Kidman that is a nice little twist before and will force a few new emotional things in The Evil Within 2 here. Fans of the franchise will know what I'm talking about when you know that you'll have to team up with Kidman again here in this part of the story.
Of course there is a bigger reason for all of this in The Evil Within 2 and that is the fact that Sebastian has learned that his daughter is still alive and being experimented on and has been since before the first title. That was something that he had come to terms with and now he has to save here and get here out of the twisted world she is now in for The Evil Within 2. I'm trying to keep things spoiler free here, but let's just say that she is in STEM and has been part of things for a while. She is also a huge part of all of this in the new area of Union that we will be rummaging through to get out of this new nightmare. That should give you the rundown for now without spoiling things for those just catching up on it all.
The Evil Within 2 — E3 Story
The horrifying things Sebastian experienced in the first game left him scarred, but rather than run from the source of his nightmares, Sebastian chased after them. He spent three years seeking answers to the questions that plagued him and trying to find the organization who ruined his life. Who is Mobius? What do they want? What is the true purpose of STEM?
In terms of gameplay though, it looks like The Evil Within 2 will be keeping all of the things we loved about the last title and adding in a few new things. Of course, there is the new open-ish world we will be moving about. We will be able to hunt and scavenge items in this new world with all of them being dynamically placed out there as well as scarce as before. Thankfully though, we will also have a new crafting system for The Evil Within 2 so we can take the items we don't need or want and make the ammo for the weapons we will be using. Not the extent that we won't have to worry about resource management, but to the point where we won't feel like we chose poorly and are getting screwed for liking a specific weapon or item to use. That makes a lot of great sense and glad that it will be here.
There will also be a new communication device in The Evil Within 2 that will allow you to talk to Kidman as well as interact with "anomalies" in the game's world. It will keep you connected to the "other world" more as well as track your side missions and all of that. How that will exactly play out is still not full described beyond what I have said here, but it will be something new to use and keep track of. Hopefully we'll learn more of this for The Evil Within 2 in a short time, but it may be held off until the release as it is something that will tie into the overall gameplay and story in the long run. We'll see I guess…
The Evil Within 2 — E3 Extended Gameplay
Set in Union, a crumbling city built using Lily’s mind as the Core, The Evil Within 2 presents a mix of closed off, claustrophobic environments that are reminiscent of the first game, and new, less linear areas that will give you the opportunity to explore at your own pace. You’ll be able to wander freely and poke through all the dark corners of the world at your leisure, but this is still a survival horror game, and ammo and resources will be scarce. You’ll need to prepare carefully and move cautiously as you discover the secrets of Union and unravel Mobius’ plans from within STEM.
Are you excited to see that The Evil Within 2 is no longer just a rumor and it will be coming this year? Have you played the original and like the idea it will be a bit more open this time around or did you want the linear path again? Are you curious as to why Sebastian and Kidman are teaming up again given the previous events out there? Let us know your thoughts on all of this and more down in the comments.
