The Steam Awards
The winners of The Steam Awards have been announced with all of The Steam Awards winners being selected by users for the first time ever
Here we go with the start of the new year with The Steam Awards first ever announced winners. While many other outlets and award shows were going on well before the end of the year, it looks like there was one that waited right up to December 31st to be able to give all games a chance. At least those that released on PC via Steam as The Steam Awards were all selected by the users during the big Steam Winter Sale and not some hand-picked panel of judges. These are all by gamers and for gamers while the awards actually go to the developer behind our favorite games that have come out. Although it looks like it all wasn't exclusive to what came out during 2016 but what was still being played during the year and timeline that votes were being tallied.
Yes, if you look below you can see the winners of The Steam Awards here and some of them are games that came out years ago, but seeing as this is a gamer based vote it seems that should be about right. Then again, not all of the voting options held titles that were new to this year either so things could have been stacked a bit. At least that is the easy way to look at it all. I'm sure that everything here was based on the number of players still active with all of the titles nominated in The Steam Awards as I know there are still a lot of CS: GO and Left 4 Dead 2 players still out the it would make sense to see them listed. It doesn't make for a good showing of the latest year of video games but it does show what truly the gamers out there are loving and should want more of.
Here's the full list of the winners of The Steam Awards for you. If you want to check out all of the nominated games you can head over to the main site but here are all of the games that made it through the full round of voting. Most of them should also be in the "Test Of Time" category but not all of them could truly win there. We'll have to see how it goes when we head toward the next year of winners for The Steam Awards.
Villain Most In Need Of A Hug — Portal 2
(Some people just need a hug.)I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award — Euro Truck Simulator 2
(This title didn’t have a huge marketing machine behind it, but you found it and loved it. Then you told your friends about it. And they loved it. And now that little game that could is about to win an award… but always remember: you totally found it first.)Test of Time — The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
(This award is for the game that is just as good today as the day you first played it. Newer games may come out, but it doesn’t matter… you’ll always come back to play this one.)Just 5 More Minutes — Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
(You have an early day tomorrow. You need to get some sleep, so you’re just going finish one more thing before you decide to tuck in for the night. Just one more. Wait, one more. What’s that you say? It’s 2:30 AM? This award is for the game that keeps you playing late.)Whoooaaaaaaa, Dude! — Grand Theft Auto V
(Some games melt your face. Maybe it was a crazy plot twist. Maybe you just got your wisdom teeth removed. Either way, this game BLOWS YOUR MIND.)Game Within A Game — Grand Theft Auto V
(Kinder Eggs. Peanut Butter Cups. Jelly Donuts. All great things stuffed with other great things. Like a mighty turducken, this award celebrates the best mini game hidden within another game.)I'm Not Crying, There's Something In My Eye — The Walking Dead
(Games are fun. But sometimes games become more than that, and touch you in a way you weren’t expecting. This award celebrates the game that blindsided you emotionally. You weren’t expecting to cry. It wasn’t in the plan. But it happened none the less.)Best Use Of A Farm Animal — Goat Simulator
(Animals are rad and almost any game is better for including them. However this game used a farm animal in the best way possible.)Boom Boom — DOOM
(Let’s face it: explosions are pretty great. In a blockbuster movie they’re thrilling. In a celebration with fireworks they’re beautiful. And when they’re behind a cop putting on sunglasses they’re nothing short of glorious. These games understand the fine art of detonation.)Love/Hate Relationship — Dark Souls III
(“Games are just supposed to be fun!”… oh sweet summer child, your naivety is adorable. Games can be more than fun. They can be challenges that demand perfection. These games are punishing gauntlets that make you question your very skill… a crucible that will push you either to greatness or a breaking point. You will wake up family members as you scream. Words will come out of your mouth that would make your mom blush. Your chill friends will ask you “why do you play something that stresses you out”… and you will stare at them with steely eyes and reply, “Because I love it.”)Sit Back And Relax — Euro Truck Simulator 2
(Did you read the description for the “Love/Hate Relationship” Award? This is the opposite.)Better With Friends — Left 4 Dead 2
(There are some games out there that just aren’t the same when you play by yourself. Maybe you need to have a friend to watch your back. Maybe you need to have a friend that you can stab in their back. Either way, mirth is awaiting those that gather friends to play these games.)
Did your favorite title make the cut and win in The Steam Awards here? Are you surprised to see so few titles from 2016 in the winner's circle here or does that show that we need to refocus on what we are building in the industry? Do you think that this will be the case if there is a second year of the awards at the end of 2017? Let us know all of your thoughts down in the comments and then discuss. The Steam Winter Sale that kicked off for The Steam Awards here is still going on until the end of January 2nd so if you want to get in on that then you should pick up some of the winners or other games that are out there.
