Under The Radar: Painkiller HD

I loved the original Painkiller with its tons of insane, over-the-top weapons, like the Stake Launcher or the double barreled Shotgun with a liquid nitrogen alt fire. I spent many hours pushing my crappy desktop PC to its limits and beyond while playing Painkiller and every single moment was worth it. If you like the good old fashioned First Person Shooters like DOOM, Quake, and Duke Nukem 3D then Painkiller is the right game for you.

The HD remake of Painkiller, titled Painkiller: Hell&Damnation, features the original Painkiller story and the expansion pack Battle Out Of Hell as well as the following:

  • 14 balls-to-the-wall, adrenaline filled levels with 4 boss levels.
  • Over 30 different kinds of the sickest, most fucked up and evil creatures to escape the bowels of Hell.
  • Super Powerful and Unique weapons that bring the pain. Sadists, get your wallets ready.
  • Giant Bosses in giant boss fights. What's not to love?
  • Co-op campaigns that can be played split-screen or online.
  • New PvP and PvE modes like Survival, Duel, Deathmatch, and Capture The Flag.
  • All new soundtrack by Ojo Rojo.
  • All Powered by the Unreal Engine 3.

There are also " anti-features" of the game, and I'm going to directly quote these from website because I find them hilarious:

"Anti-Features: (You know, the ones that make life easy)

  • No Kill-streak bonuses, airstrikes, or suicide bombings.
  • No auto-heal.
  • No AK-47, M16, or other weapons like that: just a healthy dose of .666 caliber weapons!
  • No upgraded weapons with scopes, attached rocket launchers, and extended ammo clip.
  • For information on risks and side-effects please eat the pack insert and beat your doctor or pharmacist.

  • The full game.
  • The soundtrack.
  • A making of video
  • A limited collector's edition single player Tarot Card (for DLC).
  • A limited collector's edition mulitplayer body skin (for DLC).
  • A printable poster.
  • Printable sticker templates and Postcards from Hell.
  • An art book.

Oh my god. I still can't believe that this game went completely under my radar. I feel like such a goofball for not noticing this. If there is going to be a collector's edition for the PS3 and XBox 360 versions, then you can bet your sweet ass that I will be getting them. If you haven't played the original Painkiller then Painkiller: Hell&Damnation is your perfect chance to get your hands dirty with some old school FPS. I'm talking about the "old school" FPS. Back when First Person Shooters required some skill, instead of having "Strategically placed cover" or auto-healing.

You can pick up Painkiller: Hell&Damnation for $19.99 (or the collector's edition for $29.99) on Steam right now. I'm personally going to be holding out on this one. Mainly because I don't have a PC or laptop that is strong enough to handle this game without it committing seppuku. So expect a review for the XBox version at the end of January 2013. The original Painkiller was Developed by People Can Fly (the guys who did Bulletstorm) and Published by DreamCatcher Interactive (who were acquired by Nordic Games)
