Story
The Autobots are serious in trying to leave Cybertron this time around and are getting there Ark ready to go. Wouldn't you know it that those damned Decepticons want to stop them and do a great job at it. During the fight it comes to light that some of the Auto/Dinobots have gone missing which is most likely why the Decepticons kicked so much ass. Then all the normal political BS happens including Starscream taking command again. All the Autobots want to do is leave, why is this so hard?
Hated
First and foremost, the transforming. Yes that sounds odd given the franchise, but this is more in the form of the controls. It is too easy to transform, even after switching layouts. This may seem like a ridiculous gripe, but in the heat of battle transforming is nothing like it is shown in film and TV. There were so many instances I'd be running and gunning only to have my bot accidentally transform and messing up my flow. To be honest, outside of the scenes where it is required for speed, I found myself staying in bot form. I know it has to be added because of the franchise, but to be honest since it can't function as smooth as it should be it kind of harms the overall game play.
Continuing off that, there weren't enough vehicle sequences in my opinion. The whole point of them changing here is to blend and have a faster version of themselves to move about. In past games there were a few sequences that were all about speeding through as fast as possible, but here we have collectables an Energon hidden amongst the "course." This led me, and most likely will lead you, to dropping out of the vehicle form to look around. It's almost like no one could decide on actually needing vehicles outside of nostalgia.
Loved
Finally we get the Dinobots. Finally! I'll be honest; I loved the Dinobots more than the Autobots. Let the hate flow. While I do wish they had a larger role in the game, if not the sole leading, this was a huge selling point for me. Even when the Insecticons were fully introduced early in this game, I was super excited. High Moon and Activision should totally put a game out focusing solely on them next instead of another "trying to escape Cybertron" story. Just saying.
Moving on, another thing I absolutely loved in Fall Of Cybertron is the settings for the missions. While it could be assumed that we've already fought through some of these areas in the overall story before, each one was all new. Obviously though. But out of all the designs thus far, these really stuck out for me. They were all fun, albeit hard at times, to run through as well as find all the hidden nooks. This was definitely another saving grace for the game.
Overview
Should you pick up the game? Chances are if you are the type of person who would enjoy FoC you already have. For those who might be 'iffy' still I will still recommend the game just be warned that the story in the single player feel quite similar to the past titles from the Transformers universe. It does have Dinobots and Insecticons this go around though, but it will have you hoping that the Autobots just finally get off Cybertron and stay off.
Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron was developed by High Moon Studios and published by Activision for the PS3, XBox 360, and PC on August 21st 2012. A PS3 copy of the game was supplied by the publisher for review purposes.
