Before I go into some of the new stuff, it looks to play like *gasp* a CoD game. Not too much you can do to the genre at the current state of things. The graphics, sounds and movements are all pretty much what we have grown to expect from the franchise. But there are a couple of cool things to the solo campaign that I can touch upon from the demo I saw.
- There is a rail gun type weapon. While it wasn't explained in my demo, I could not find any other explanation as to why it was the only gun that had to "charge up" and could shoot through damn near and obstacle in the game. I saw this thing shoot through armored cars as well as those thick concrete columns holding up the LA freeway. It even had that green spot light like in the movie Eraser.
- There is a great level of detail when it comes to the LA portion of the game. There was even a fire fight that took place right outside of the convention center in the game that looked exactly like the place all of us had been walking for the whole week.
- There are car chases where you get to control more than just the guns at high speeds.
- There is also true aerial combat. Not just flying drones around but actually hopping into a jet and piloting it all over LA.
Outside of that, the other big focus was on the new Strike Force side missions. These are missions that can alter a bit of the overall story as well as lead to some cool in game bonuses for the story depending on how well you performed the missions. What was the coolest part of this whole thing though is the fact that it isn't just side missions in FPS mode, but a blending of FPS and RTS.
We were shown one map were the objective was to capture and hold three points on the map. The player had ground troops, drones and robots at their disposal. The interesting part of it all was that at any time you can pull back into an Overwatch mode and play the mission out like a standard RTS game selecting unit, deploying them and letting the AI duke it out. Then if you so choose you can hop into ANY of your units on the fly and play them in FPS mode. So if your AI is starting to suck balls you can personally hop in and give it one-four.
Like I said before, it looks and has the feel of another CoD title, but the new game play mechanics and features have pulled me back in. I am sure that there will be a bunch of people still bitching about it, but just as sure as I am of that Black Ops II is going to be shattering selling records again. We'll see this November the 13th.
