I guess before we get all up in arms about this, let's take a look at what is planned. First, and I think the best, is that the core team for Single Player was not tapped for the multiplayer addition to the game. All those job postings we've seen that cause the rumors seem to have been to create a second partial team to do only the multiplayer, or so can be assumed by the comments made by the game's director in the below video. If that is true then if the multiplayer sucks monkey nipples at least we should get a good single player experience.
As for the nuts and bolts, shown is only a Domination mode mixed with a Capture The Flag mode where the end goal is to do what Odysseus did to Polyphemus with a team of four Spartans. On top of that it was also talked about how the "class" system will be linked to aligning yourself to one of four gods, Zeus, Poseidon, Hades or Ares. This will dictate what specials, magic, armor and perks you will get for the multiplayer portion of the game. Being that I can align myself to Hades I think I will give Multiplayer a bit of chance I guess.
While Multiplayer was the focus of the reveal, there were a few things brought up in regards to single player. Here's a brief list.
- Story will focus a bit more on Kratos' family and life as a Spartan
- Kratos won't look as buff as he did in all previous games. It does take place before he was climbing titans and such so it makes sense.
- Kratos will have Blades of Chaos.
- Story takes place after deal with Ares.
Being a huge GoW fan I find these items a bit confusing. At least given the cannon that they have taken in regards to the comics and other prequels/in-between-quels that have already been made. I mean to be honest I see the only way to do a true prequel at this point would be to go before Kratos gave himself over to Ares. I guess we'll just have to hope for the best from the team that has yet to disappoint as well as look forward to some explanations at E3 here in a month.
Here's a clip of the multiplayer as well as a PS Blog interview with the game director. Oh and a few screens and concept art for the multiplayer.
