Still, it all comes down to dollars and sense. No, I wrote that correctly. Although gaming is becoming more and more accepted in the mainstream, handheld gaming is still considered very much a "kids" toy. So, when you think about that $250 price point, think of it from a parent's point of view. It just doesn't make sense to spend that kind of money on a gaming system for a child.
When I first read the headline, I immediately had some buyer's remorse, but do not fear, if you are a current 3DS owner, as I am. Nintendo is rewarding us for our stupidity loyalty. Before August 12th, when the new price structure goes live, current owners will be enrolled in the Ambassador program. Ambassadors will receive 20 free downloadable games - 10 Virtual Console titles beginning in September and 10 Game Boy Advance titles by year's end.
Nintendo once again demonstrates that they have one of the best marketing teams in the world. (Maybe Sony should look into that) Do the price drop well in advance of the release of the PlayStation Vita and the holiday season. Also, the drop will be in time with the big first party releases they have planned for the 3DS. Lastly, they are giving the early adopters something so they don't lose the rich market of techies who like swanky gadgets.
Will 20 free games be enough to make me forget about the $80 extra I spent on my Nintendo 3DS? Only time will tell. I just know that on September 1st, I'm going to be downloading and playing me some original The Legend of Zelda.
