We were lucky enough to get our hands on a couple of PS Vita's and some of the software coming on or around launch time for the system. All of which showing off some of the new features and capabilities of the PS Vita. There is a full array of images below for you to set your peepers on so you can have a good look at what is going on with the PS Vita. But as always, images and video can't fully describe the features and how it all handles. This is of course where I come in and save the day.
Here you go. There is more after these images so please keep reading if you want to know more.
So there are quite a bit of new features that are visible there, but there are some that you might have missed. Let's see, we have two analog sticks now, touch screen in the front, touch pad in the back, front and rear cameras, microphone, gyroscopic motion controls and Wi-Fi or 3G capabilities. Just to name a few. That is all nice and good, but what I am sure you want to know is how it handles and not exactly what is under the hood.
Again, lucky for us, the games they had for us helped to demonstrate the basics of what these new features could do. Time to break it down DJ Lance Rock style again.
LittleBigPlanet (Touch Screen/Pad)
As for the game, it is nothing we haven't seen in LittleBigPlanet (1 or 2) with the exception being the use of the new input devices. Even those can be replicated with the Move controls to some degree. What was interesting though was the fact that the touch screen/pad was extremely responsive. More so than any other touch screen device I've ever played with. There wasn't any delay or needing to swipe more than once to get an action to play out. Something that I know frustrates the hells out of me with my mobile devices.
The really cool thing about this though is that it can open up many doors for developers to incorporate some of the features that iPod/iPad/iPhone/Droids have been taking advantage of. Not to mention some of the other creations the LBP community can think of using multitouch for.
Little Deviants (Augmented Reality)
While this title took advantage of many of the aspects of the PS Vita, the one that displayed the potential of the hardware had to be Augmented Reality. Hunting down flying enemies in the augmented world using the back camera or using the rear touch pad to feel like you were actually pressing the screen up really added quite a bit to the gaming experience. I can only imagine what the designers will come up with these new features.
It was the basics like this that make me think about what can be created just in general to use with new tech. Especially since there are multiple wireless option available for the PS Vita, even though I am sure many of us are not happy with the AT&T 3G exclusivity.
When all is said and done here, the Vita is a nice piece of hardware with a lot of features we've been wanting, but it comes down to what the developers and designers put out for us. Even if it offered up Lawnmower Man type of Virtual Reality, if the games pumped out for it were the same quality from the film, no one would see the need to dump upwards of $300 for it.
Just like the Wii-U I'd say keep an eye on the PS Vita. It could seriously end up being the next big thing in handheld/mobile gaming, but that is going to come down to the software and/or apps that will be available. I'm just glad I didn't shell out for the PSP Go and held out.
