Hello And Goodbye To The World Of Starcraft?

Probably the coolest thing I saw this week was a video presentation for World of Starcraft! This whole video is done in the Starcraft 2 map editor and although it's in pre-pre-alpha it is something to watch. Check out the video after the jump!

Now to answer your big question. No this is not Blizzard's official next gen MMO. Nor is it a secret leak for Titan. It's just modders doing what they do best. You can check out the developers' website here. This is amazing and it really highlights the power of the Starcraft 2 editor tool set and within the proper hands can be limitless. Not sure I would have titled it World of Starcraft but to each their own.

I can see some limitations using the Starcraft 2 Map editor to produce an MMO though.

  1. You need a constant host for this persistent world (Battle.net?)
  2. You can have up to 16 people in a SC2 map, which I can't see classified as an MMO but a kick ass custom map.

Not big things but it is still something one needs to think about when developing.

The biggest question that I'm hearing "is this Blizzard's Titan project?" To that I say no considering Blizzard has already informed everyone that the new Next Gen MMO is supposed to be a completely new IP. I highly doubt that it's going to be "World of Starcraft."

According to these forums Blizzard has taken Copyright action and contacted YouTube which in turn has now contacted the creator of the Mod. Accordingly the video is getting pulled everywhere so if you get a chance you need to watch this and soon! All I have to say to the developer is that if you wanted to get Blizzard's attention you succeeded. Hope they have a job opening!
