First up we have Paul Farley, CEO of Tag Games made this statement, “The Apple iPad is another huge milestone in the move from games being consumed via physical retail to digital platforms. The iPhone is a hard act to follow, yet the impact of the iPad on the games industry could be equally as large. It is a distributive ‘game changer’ that heralds not only a new form factor for games and digital media consumption, but a further opportunity for innovative and creative games to be brought to market by independent UK game producers.”
Next up Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA, said, “The iPad is a potentially exciting development for the games industry. As well its size and resolution, the iPad provides a new device for gaming, sitting between consoles and mobile platforms. It could provide a further fillip to smaller game developers as the cost for game development on this platform should be lower in comparison to console games.”
Chairman of TIGA, CEO and Creative Director of Rebellion, Jason Kingsley, said, “The iPad creates further opportunities for game developers to provide exciting games on a new platform for new customers. I am confident that UK game developers will grasp this opportunity.”
My Take:
Look the iPad should be a nice device and all that. But do we really need ANOTHER device to play games on. We already have the three major consoles along with portal devices (PSP, DS, iPhone/iPod, ect) To me it just seems to be another excuse for the smaller companies to have yet another platform to develop games on. After seeing tons of tablets at CES and knowing that games will be develop for those tablet, one question is left to ask for gamers out there; Will you, the hardcore gamers, actually go out and get the iPad or a tablet for gaming? Do you see yourself, the hardcore gamers / readers, sitting down with a tablet and playing games on it? Only time will tell and we will see what kind of games will come out for the iPad / tablet.
