Initially Robbie was presumed dead but his body was found having been launched by the blast five hundred miles away. His kinetic shield protected him though the blast overloaded his powers. When he was recovered by the authorities, Robbie was held in prison before eventually being moved to a facility for superpowered criminals. As a result of his team’s negligence, Robbie his held accountable for the deaths of the more than six hundred individuals and the superhero community has become divided causing the Civil War. Robbie eventually decides to cooperate with the leaders of the Superhuman Registration Act. His original powers were thought to be burnt out but after some analysis conducted by Reed Richards it is believed that his powers had actually begun to evolve. It is later discovered that Robbie can generate tremendous energy blasts, but he must cause physical pain to himself first. As a result of the changes in his abilities and the weight of the Stamford incident, Robbie had a new suit made. Covering himself head to toe, the new armor was designed with 612 internal spikes so that he may activate his powers, but also pay for the 612 deaths committed by Nitro. With his new costume and powers, Robbie took the name Penance and was assigned to the Thunderbolts.
Initially Robbie could generate an energy field around his body capable of absorbing kinetic energy. He could then redirect the energy against any target he made physical contact with. However, by reflecting the energy outwards, Robbie would be sent bouncing in the opposite direction. In general, whatever kinetic energy he absorbed, Robbie was capable of reflecting it back with greater force. This power made him immune to most physical attacks. Following the Stamford Incident, Robbie’s powers changed. Though he could no longer create a kinetic field, Robbie is now capable of generating a more raw form of kinetic energy. Typically he fires blasts from his hand, however he is also able to create a storm-like discharge around his body. Up until recently, Robbie had to physically harm himself in order to activate his powers.
Robbie Baldwin will be a playable character in the upcoming Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 under his Penance alter-ego. Based on what I’ve seen and read of him in Thunderbolts, I would expect him to be a ranged character first with some close quarters abilities. His most useful attack will likely be a straightforward beam or blast attack that will have some significant knockback power. Also in the comics he is capable of focusing his powers into his hands to supercharge his punches. I should think this would be another of his abilities. Finally, I see Penance having some sort of radial energy attack. Regardless, Penance is able to generate incredibly powerful blasts in the comics and as such if Activision comes even half-way close to recreating that, he will be a valuable part of any team. Now if only they include the costumes from his Speedball days because that Penance suit is freaky.
