Comic Con 2009, has come and gone. While San Diego cleans up after the mess that was left behind from the geek's the world over, I figured I'd give you all a daily recap of what happened during the con as well as a little of the after hours stuff that we at Aggrogamer were able to partake in. By we, myself and Corey. But we still left a heavy presence behind.
There will be a few things listed in here that were announced, but this is more of a commentary on the event and how it interacts with the gamer society as well as geek society.
Preview Night
For those of you who have never been or have no clue what preview night is, let me explain. It is a special night for those of us that purchased the big four day package for the week/weekend. It takes place the night before the convention actually starts and lets people in to get the lay of the land as well as check out a few things while the human populace is light in the convention hall. It also lets those same people get their hands on one of a kind items that will fly off shelves first thing in the morning for the first day of the convention. Well at least that is what it was.
No longer does that seem to be the case at the San Diego Comic Con. After getting my badge and heading in for what I thought was exclusive looks at things, I was greeted with a crowd comparable to what you get on a normal full day. The only difference was that half of the crowd had on special pinned tags saying they were allowed in even though they didn't pay the full four day price, but paid a special Preview Night price. Now they are selling passes for Preview Night? WTF? Where is the exclusiveness of it for us who shelled out cash 9 months early?
Needless to say, I didn't stay long to see anything other than long lines and where everything was. There was no point. Even the exclusives for the convention weren't going to be on sell until the Friday or Saturday. The excuse, to get them out on days where there was more of an assurance of selling out in minutes. So, pretty much taking all reason to buy early away at this point.
Not sure if this was a ploy from the convention coordinators or because of how the convention center was raping the convention in prices this year. Forcing venders as well as those in charge to figure ways to pay the crazy high price to produce the convention. In either instance, this had A LOT of people leaving in a very disgruntled manner. They have ruined the reason for people to buy tickets early and thus secure the fact that the convention can go on. Practices like this will keep people holding off a bit more on buying these tickets.
Stay tuned for day 1 of the convention. This will cover the first full day of the convention. The exclusives. Some of the hands-on. Some of the parties. Also when the convention really begins to take an upturn from a lack luster preview night.
