Survival Is Way More Personal Than Ever In The Alters

The Alters

A new video for The Alters shows off how the choices will be a bit more personal and how The Alters builds upon a tried & true game already

There just always seems to be something new going on for The Alters out there and sometimes it is good and sometimes it is bad. Thankfully, here we are with a bit more of the good path of things while we wait to see where 11 Bit Studios is taking the game. We still do not have that final release date for it to hit the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC but we have slightly more gameplay to take in. In this instance, it is some that show off just how one of their past titles helped to shape this one and make sure this one was just as personal as ever. Not just because we are playing with the same characters over and over, but in a way that will hit more of the hearts and minds as they have done before.

In the new gameplay for The Alters, we get to see how it is kind of building upon the form that This War Of Mine gave us. Some similarities could be seen well before now, mainly with the structure of how we will be keeping all the Jans alive, but also with the gripping story we should encounter. It also looks like The Alters will be using some of the time mechanics, with the twist being that it is a countdown clock for us to race against and not one that we are trying to keep going as long as possible. Not to mention to mix in all of the resources gathering out there in the alien world to keep the full crew of ourselves alive. A solid sign that the team has learned from their past accomplishments and is trying to evolve them into something truly new out there.

The AltersThis War Of Mine Comparison

While The Alters — an upcoming sci-fi personal survival game about life-defining choices — may seem worlds apart from This War Of Mine, the first groundbreaking success of 11 Bit Studios, the two share more than just a part of the development team.

At their core, both games are about survival. In This War Of Mine, days and nights pass as you do whatever it takes to outlast the war in a besieged city. In The Alters, survival is a race against time—a relentless battle against a scorching sun that will turn everything to dust if you fail to keep your mobile base moving.

Both games force you to step out of your safe space — whether it’s a bombed-out shelter in This War Of Mine or the expandable, circular base in The Alters. In both, venturing into a hostile environment isn’t just a risk—it’s a necessity in a world where resources are scarce. The circular base can be expanded to meet the needs of your crew, and like the shelter before it, players observe it from a similar perspective.

But where This War of Mine gave you a group of survivors to manage, in The Alters you “build” your crew in the most unique way—by revisiting your own past and altering the choices you made. Through the Quantum Computer, you create alternate versions of yourself — Jans who share your face, parts of your memories, and even some of your regrets. Each Alter carries different skills crucial to operating the base, but some may struggle to accept that they are not the Jan Dolski, only a Jan Dolski.

With a team made up entirely of versions of yourself — each embodying decisions you once feared or hesitated to take — The Alters presents choices that are deeply personal. Some will be difficult. Some will be irreversible. All of them, past and present, will shape the outcome of your survival.

Developed by 11 bit studios, including creators of This War of Mine, The Alters launches in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, also in Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.

Were you making all of these comparisons between The Alters and This War Of Mine before now or did this shine the light on it for you? Will the clock running down be a bigger drive in this game or would it be better to see how long we can last instead? How personal will this story be given that it is mostly the same character in the mix, or will that be how they give us a version we can fully relate to in the story? Slide on down the page to those comments and leave those thoughts and discussion there. We will certainly keep the ball rolling on this one and make sure you keep seeing all the sides of The Alters out there.
