The Walking Dead
Details on how The Walking Dead: A New Frontier will carry over all the saved data from the previous The Walking Dead titles has been detailed out a bit more
It feels like it was waiting until the last minute, but as it looks we have a clue as to how The Walking Dead: A New Frontier will be keeping our saved data from the last two seasons to bring it all over when we spin up the new episodes on December 20th. This has been something that I know I was curious on how Telltale Games was going to do it and now we have an answer of sorts. It looks like we will have three options as detailed and they will give us a large variable on where we will start the game off with Clementine and A.J. although I am going to guess it is going to be generally the same physical place in the end. Or start, if you will…
It looks like we will have three different options all depending on how you want your experience in The Walking Dead to move on from. The first being that you start off in a place that I'm guessing Telltale wants us all to start at and that is with Clem and A.J. being all alone and having no ties to any of the characters in the new episodes. It does make for a nice way to start us off given the length of time since the last season and for those who will be experiencing the franchise for the first time with The Walking Dead: A New Frontier. I'm sure there are a few of you out there still.
The next part can be seen as one option as it will continue the story of The Walking Dead from where we left off but given that we have two options here it really feels like three in total. That being that we can carry over all of our past save data to dictate how we progressed Clem over the last two seasons and what relationships she already has based on all of that. You know, the best option for a true fan of The Walking Dead. The other way to continue the story here is to go through the usual "select your history" path we've seen when playing games that are episodic. Apparently this will place us in one of 42 different places in the game but I'm going to guess that is on the personal relationship level and not the physical location in the game. If memory serves there were eight different ways to end season two so…
Start New Story
This is for people who haven’t played The Walking Dead before, or don’t recall their previous experience. In this mode, Season Three starts with a Clementine who has lost everyone from the previous Seasons and is left alone with AJ.
Continue Your Story
If you want to continue with the story you created in Season One and/or Season Two, then we have some options for you.
Option 1 – Story Generator
Inside of Season Three, there is a “story generator” option where we’ll ask you a series of questions that help us hone in on your Clementine. This will select one of 42 different “starting points”, that include not just your ending but also the relationships you had with different characters and the style of player you are.
This was a fascinating thing for us to build and involved us combing through mountains of Walking Dead data and using some fancy data science to figure this out. We’ll be talking more about this, but it was organic and cool. I guess 42 really is the answer to life the universe and everything!
Option 2 – Use your Season Two save game
- If you’re playing on the same device, and you still have your old Season Two save file, you can import your save. When you start a new game in Season Three, you’ll be automatically prompted to use your Season Two save data.
- If you want to play on a different device, and still have your old device with Season Two saves. Then we’ve done our best to help you out. We’ve recently updated Season Two (on all platforms) to include Telltale Cloud Saves. You’ll need to update your app, launch Season Two and create a Telltale Account (if you don’t already have one). Then you can enable Cloud Saves and upload your Season Two save to the cloud. When you launch Season Three, you’ll be able to login to your Telltale Account and download the Cloud Save. Then you’re good to go! This is how to migrate your story from one device to another, like moving from PS3 to PS4, or Xbox 360 to Xbox One. It works from any platform to any other platform.
Which option will you be taking when it comes to playing The Walking Dead: A New Frontier? Do you think it will matter given that Telltale Games wants to use the default of Clem and A.J. being alone in this horrible world? Where did you last leave Clem and the gang or do you need to go back and have a refresher course to get ready for next week? Let us know down in the comments what you are thinking and discuss. For more on The Walking Dead: A New Frontier though, be sure to stay right here as we'll keep bringing you all of the updates and news that we can on this game and you won't want to be left out.
