Until Dawn
A new 'experience' for Until Dawn has been released into the wild that uses Binaural Audio to try and place you in the world of Until Dawn with only your ears to help
Until Dawn has been out for six weeks now. Crazy to think about that isn't it? It's also crazy to think about the fact that Supermassive Games missed the opportunity to have Until Dawn launch in October instead and use all of that horror drama for a good use around Halloween. I think Until Dawn would have sold even better than it already has and the reviews even stronger if it matched up but that doesn't change a thing here. Especially since it looks like Until Dawn will have some kind of clout during October with the PS4 game proper and a new little experience.
I wish I was going to follow up that last line with an announcement of Until Dawn The VR Experience but that is not the case. I also wish I was following it up with Sony creating multiple "Haunted Houses" around the world in the theme of Until Dawn to help celebrate the success of the game. The celebration we are getting here for Until Dawn is a nice little project that Supermassive Games has put together another "Choose Your Own Path" video where they used Binaural Audio to be your only clues on how to press on and try to survive. I think it is also in the guise of being one of the "missing" characters in Until Dawn.
Binaural Audio is a process of audio recording that uses techniques that simulate the ways that human ears work. Something that most surround systems can't emulate and for Until Dawn that could be a huge thing. According to all of the science this should be as close to being in the world of Until Dawn without all of those cool thing I mentioned above that I am sure we would all love to see Supermassive Games get up and running along with replays of Until Dawn.
Until Dawn — Binaural Series
It could be my setup here or just how my ears work but I was not able to truly feel what they were going for here for Until Dawn. I followed all of the instructions and such but it didn't sound any different than using my surround system. I'll try and blame it all on that as it does sound like Supermassive Games did try to do something fun as a follow up to Until Dawn for Halloween but it just fell flat for me. Damn my ears and not working the way that it says they should based on the recording methods.
How was your experience with this Until Dawn audio experience? Did you feel like you were in the world or does it take a lot more than just audio clues to give you that sense of immersion? I am curious as to why Supermassive Games didn't have anything on the screen for visual aids either to give that real immersion; aren't you? Let us know and leave some feedback in the comments below. I hope we see more for Until Dawn as time presses on and if we do you better bet we will have the updates here for you.
