If you are like me you most likely missed out on Zombi U back in 2012 given the fact that it was a Wii U exclusive title. Something that I am guessing that Ubisoft also regrets forcing as it received only mediocre reviews and didn't sell to well even for being one of the few horror titles available on the system at the time. The reason I also say that they most likely regret releasing Zombi U as a console exclusive there is that now three years later it is making the jump to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC with a re-branded name of Zombi. Not too clever there but I guess it works as only Wii U titles should have the 'U' shoehorned in there to make sure you know what console you are playing on.
Rumors about Zombi cropped up a while ago but were generally dismissed given some of the gameplay features that the original version had that just wouldn't port over too well. At least perceived wouldn't port over. One of which being the inventory system that required you to look away from the screen in Zombi U to the second screen of the Wii U pad. This is being replaced with a no-pause option while going through your backpack in Zombi so you can still feel that terror. You know because that was hard to do in the first place and Ubisoft doesn't want to admit they got paid a lot of money to have Zombi U be an exclusive title.
The only feature that is going to be lost here in Zombi is the multiplayer aspect that was in the Wii U version. This was an instance where the player running through the streets of London had to deal with someone else placing zombie hordes via the second screen in Zombi U. Instead this has been dropped completely and we are only getting a single player version here in Zombi. Because Ubisoft could create a mobile app that does the same thing as they did with Watch Dogs or any of their other IPs out there. Seems odd that they wouldn't if they really wanted to push Zombi and such. Just my musings though.
You can see the Zombi reveal trailer below but as far as other advancements that will be coming we are getting two more melee weapons in the mix. So in Zombi we will have not only a cricket bat but also a shovel that adds a bit more range and the ability to hit more zombies and a nailed bat that will also hit multiple zombies in one swing as well as do more damage and have a higher crit rate. Why would we not always use the nail bat in Zombi? I don't know. The last feature is that we will have more range abilities with the flashlight. This makes sense as the newer systems could render more so we should be able to see further in Zombi right?
Zombi — Pure Survival Horror Is Coming To PS4, Xbox One, And PC
Okay, so I mentioned the other updates but it doesn't look like the character models, textures, or resolution seem to have been given an upgrade here for Zombi. At least not from the trailer above. It looks like Ubisoft stripped out the stuff I mentioned above, added in the new weapons, and then made it play on the new systems. You would think that in three years they would have been able to make the vast leaps to make the zombies have a real fear to them instead of something most of us will laugh at. Maybe it will be the atmosphere and single player aspects of Zombi that will drive that fear and not the undead the game is named for. We can hope I guess.
There will not be much of a wait for those who want to give Zombi a play as it will be available digitally on August 18th 2015. Yea, that is only a few weeks away now. Will you be giving it a go now that it is coming to other platforms? Will you even notice in the mix of all the other titles coming out around the same time? Let us all know down in the comments. We'll hopefully have the chance to give it a try so be sure to check back in for more on Zombi as we get up to and just past the release date here. You might not want to miss a thing for it…
