If you are a huge fan or Firefly then you may have already heard about Firefly Online. I've been keeping an eye on this PC, iOS and Android MMO since I first caught wind and up until now I've been a little under-impressed with what I've seen thus far. We've not had any good gameplay video and to my knowledge a rather low quality CGI trailer to try and explain what Firefly Online is all about and why the fans should be excited that it is coming. There's even a way to sign up for the Beta for the game that really doesn't give us a thing. That was until now…
There is finally some gameplay for Firefly Online and a bit more on what this Unity title is all about. Plain and simple in Firefly Online you will be taking on the role of a random captain in the universe of the show. Just as in the show you will be smuggling, trading, getting into adventures, and everything in between as said captain and you AI crew. A crew that you will have to micromanage to keep things running smooth on the ship. Especially if/when you run into the some of the famed characters slated to be voiced by some of the actors to give the whole thing a bit more of a feel in the Firefly universe.
Now you here MMO and you automatically think of a very specific type of hub/social aspect that is standard in every other MMO title out there. Firefly Online is looking to not have anything like that but have the online social parts be involving when you and your crew runs into, run afoul, or need to trade with another player's captain and crew out in the massive universe. So considerably like the show just not too sure yet as to how those will all play out in Firefly Online and its gameplay. Especially after seeing the following footage as a point of reference.
Firefly Online: 3D Environment Engine Sneak Peek
Ok, well talk about feeling like the rug has been pulled out from under us with this footage from Firefly Online. While the game looks much better than anything I've seen up until now I am not seeing how any of the above mechanics and gameplay was demonstrated here. In fact based of this footage the game doesn't look like Firefly Online but some other random Sci Fi horror title. You would think that there would be some kind of highlight of the mentioned mechanics and not someone just walking around while clips from the show play over the footage. Are we being bamboozled? It's too early to tell I guess.
I'm definitely going to have to keep a closer eye on Firefly Online to see what Spark Plug Games and Quantum Mechanix will be doing with the franchise. It is so loved by so many that Firefly Online will have to nail it or get nailed to a wall with spiked codpieces worn by rabid wolverines. The fans are crazy like that and from what I've seen thus far I am still on the fence; although I am a fan of senseless violence and would love to see the wolverine thing happen but not specifically to the Spark Plug team as of yet.
