CES 2012: Sony Wants You To Go 3G

I am of the opinion that Sony heard the cries of their constituents and worked with AT&T and their other partners to attempt to make the 3G model appealing. Here is a list of factors that may have you thinking about going 3G.

  • The Unlimiteds - Formerly Qrosity (the name is very much dead), the Music Unlimited service and its partner, Video Unlimited, are very much a part of the Sony Entertainment Network. Sony brought these features under the one-logon PSN ID so that you can easily bring these on the go; they want you to be able to access it any time on the Vita.
  • PlayMemories - Taking a page from the Google/Picasa playbook, Sony's newly announced photo suite - PlayMemories - will give users of the Sony Entertainment Network plenty of opportunities to use their Sony cameras, tablets and phones to take pictures and upload them to not only keep for posterity, but be able to share them across many platforms. With the PS Vita having a front and rear camera and a host of social media already loaded on the device, Sony wants you to have the ability to share your memories with everyone on the web in a moment's notice.
  • Cloud Save - I wrote about this in the previous article, but having the ability to continue your PS3 games on the road using your PS Vita and loading from a cloud save anywhere to pick up exactly where you left off is an excellent feature. I asked during my demo how exactly Cloud Save support would work with 3G and I was assured (at least with Lair) that saving up to the Cloud was an active decision and the Vita wouldn't use any 3G data without your express consent.
  • Sony's deal with AT&T - I announced this back on Monday, but I found AT&T's pricing structure for the PlayStation Vita to be nothing short of a miracle. I have AT&T as my phone service, so I know what soul suckers they can be. So, for me to see that there will be no contract to sign is simply jaw dropping. Then, to top it off, the pricing structure of $15 for 250MB or $25 for 2GB is much better than I expected.

There is no doubt in my mind that Sony has made a tremendous effort to make the 3G platform of their PlayStation Vita a viable and attractive option for their target demographic: early adopter tech enthusiasts. I think after this week, you'll see an increase in Vita 3G pre-orders&helip;and for good reason.
