Comic Con 2011 Impression: Darksiders II

First we got a new look at the scale and transportation you will use to get around the game world as Death. In Darksiders the world was quite a bit smaller in size so you would find yourself not really needing to use any special form of transportation. In the small demo shown we got to see not only Despair, Death's Steed, but the fact that it would be needed to quickly move about the game world. That and he just looks down right awesome.

If you played the first game you might have noticed how it was very "combat" oriented. You did play as War so it makes sense there, but not so much for Death. Death is more of a "rogue" type character in the game and so the game play mechanics needed to suit the new style. Death seems to be a lot like Spider Man when it comes to movement. Longer jumps, faster running and being able to climb up sheer surfaces with ease. You know things you wished your DnD Rogue could always do. It sounds odd, but it really fits and makes the game seem a bit more player friendly.

Lastly we were shown the new combat of the game, which like the movement/platforming, fits just the same. Everything looked extremely fluid as Death swapped between all of the available weapons. It also looked to be extremely fast paced when compared to War in the first Darksiders. I did not find the combat before fun at all but the overhaul that looks to have happened has me extremely engaged in what Darksiders II will have in store. It looks like the difference in using the Cestus in GoW being the first game and the Blades of Chaos being the style now.

Now outside of the basics, we were able to get a little more info about the story of the game. Nothing much that couldn't be extrapolated on through web searches except the glowing green on Death's chest. This is more a story element linking to some great fault Death had committed which lingers still to this day. So while he is trying to save humanity from Apocalypse, Death will also be trying to redeem for past wrongs.

Now that I am done rambling, feel free to take a gander at the new screen shots below. I know for one I am extremely excited for this title after seeing the new updates. I won't hide the fact that I didn't care all that much for the first game, but this one looks like something I will pour hours into. I just wish I didn't have to wait until next year.
