E3 2010 Impressions: Mortal Kombat

With all that buzz just days before the event you would expect to have something to show at E3 for it, and boy did they. Nothing playable for anyone on the show floor, but those lucky enough to have a meeting or willing to stand in line for over an hour to get in to the 15 minute showing got a great glimpse of what is going on with the new Mortal Kombat game. Lucky for you, I was lucky enough to get in and view what they had for the new game.

First things first, they made sure everyone knew that they are going back to the roots of what made Mortal Kombat such a great fighting game. From there they vastly expanded on those elements. The biggest of them being the violence and gore; closely followed by the dynamic personalities of the kombatants.

True fatalities are back with a vengeance! Not only back, but even more brutal and violent. Not to mention that it seems that all the other gimmicks (Animalities, Babalities, etc.) are no longer seem to be in there as a pansier option to "Finish Them". You know what I am talking about.

Continuing along that theme, the fatalities are not the only place to see all the blood and gore. During the fights you actually get red blood spraying off the kombatants. Well red when it is suppose to be, Reptile and Sektor did not have red, but that's with good reason. On top of the blood is also the fact that the character models get damaged and stay damaged in between rounds. If you stabbed Mina with an ice sword, she carries that gaping wound throughout the fight. This can lead to some kombatants walking away looking the loser when they are the definite winner, as they still have their heads attached.

Now while you'll get to see the external damage persist through rounds, what about all the internal damage from having a robot head crushing a skull or multiple punches to the junk? That still exists and isn't just brushed aside as well is it? Well in the new Mortal Kombat you get to see it in the form of charged "Ultra Combos." Think along Street Fighter terms and then remember what you saw, or will see, in the teaser trailer. Those scenes where you get an x-ray view of the characters; yea, this is where this comes in. They are massive damage combos that add that extra feel of pain to the match. Some, like Cage's nut buster, will leave you walking away with sympathy pains.

Now violence and kombat aside, the team has also gone quite the distance with flavor and extra game play options for Mortal Kombat. Flavor in the fashion of levels and character animations. Like how all of the backgrounds are more dynamic than before. Sometimes you will see other fights taking place in the background, all with random outcomes or events that don't play out the same twice.

More on the flavor of the game come along with giving the characters personality, not only with their voice acting, but in subtle animations as well. In the past every character had the same standard movements. All the guys had a hulking and angry type movement until they unleashed their attacks. Now even these are all customized based on the character. Cookie cutter motions are now a thing of the past.

One last thing that was show, and that I'll touch on before letting you to the videos below, is that for the first time there is a tag team mode added into Mortal Kombat. No players get to choose from Arcade, Versus and Tag Team modes. Possibly more to come, but what was shown where these three. All working how you would assume as well; including the new tag team mode. Play any Marvel Vs. Capcom game and you will know what this is all about; just with Mortal Kombat characters.

Mortal Kombat is still a ways off with a tentative release in 2011. Expect more of the 26 character roster and DLC to be announced in the coming months. Who will join Reptile, Sub Zero, Scorpion, Mina, Sektor, Night Wolf, Johnny Cage and Kung Lao? We'll see.
