Mini Review: Resident Evil 5: Lost In Nightmares

This little, hour long, extra content for the game's story is a perfect addition for any "Resident Evil"-phile. Or at least someone that enjoyed RE5 and wants a bit more for the game right now. Or at least want to know what happened to Jill in all of those flash backs during the game proper.

While there has been no change at all to the graphics and controls, outside of the look of the new costumes, this new DLC is all about the story and the scare factor. Something that, to me, has been missing in the Resident Evil franchise for a while. While yes there are jumps and shocks, this one actually gave me a sense of panic. Much like when the dogs crash through the window in the very first RE. For instance, there is an entire section where Chris and Jill have to run around with no weapons, and figure out a way to kill one of the slowly stalking "guards". They are huge, scary looking, and some how sneaky as fuck.

The scares don't stop there either. Walking around a rebuilt version of Spencer's Mansion had me waiting for the same gags used in the first game. Something that Capcom didn't actually do. Which either helped the "fear" or harmed it. I'm still not sure. Wait until you walk down the infamous "Dog Hallway" and you will know what I mean.

Moving from the horrifying to the horrid, I will say that they voice acting in the game is still pretty poor. Almost like Capcom wants to keep the original feel of bad acting because it has been known in every RE title. Only this time it looks like they at least tried to "upgrade" to something new. Which was nice, but still way off from where other games have set the bar now. At least it wasn't completely unbearable, just not up to snuff.

In the end though, I still completely recommend picking up this DLC for the game. It adds enough of a difference and experience to be worth the five bucks. Unless you really want to buy the whole new version of the game in the coming weeks. The choice is yours.

Resident Evil: Lost In Nightmares was developed and published by Capcom for the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 18th. Requires a copy of Resident Evil 5. (Lost In Nightmares and another new downloadable scenario will both be included in the March-slated Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition version of RE5. Lost In Nightmares retails for about $5.00 USD on XBox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network. A code for the DLC was given to us by Capcom for reviewing purposes. I played through the new content in about an hour.
