E3 Impressions: Dante's Inferno

While there isn't much I am allowed to speak about from the behind closed doors showing of EA's Dante's Inferno, there is a little I can speak on as well as show. Just incase you haven't seen the new trailer or the new shots from the game. All from a mixture of the PS3, Xbox, and PSP versions. Even though the gameplay they showed off was from the PS3 version. The graphics were to crisp to be from the PSP and XBox doesn't have a Square or Triangle button, so I figured it was safe to assume there.

Let me tell you the basics of what I can say out of this showing of the game before I give you my thoughts on it. There was a new enemy announced as well as a showing of one of the previously announced ones shown off, at least that I was informed was ok to let loose on the internet. These enemies are un-baptised babies and a demon of gluttony. The gluttony demon looks really close to a fertility goddess doll that you can pick up in any new age shop. A tall fat lady that spits stomach acid all over the area. The babies on the other hand look like what you would expect was birthed from the creatures of Dead Space. Pretty much a fast moving baby with the spider legs of Invader Zim. Hope that gets you the visual to think about.

They did show off Limbo as well as the Wrath level of the game in this Demo. Of course I can't get into too much detail, but I will say that any that have given the book a good read through, you will not be let down with it at all. Their interpretations of these two areas is really cool to see as well as spawns memories of the mental visuals I had from the descriptions. Mind you I also had an extremely warped view of it in my head and this is comparable.

Now, as for the gameplay, this is were it takes a little downward spiral for me. I am not kidding in any bit here, but it is exactly the same as God of War. Down to the combo count and the 'XP' orbs that fly to you once you kill an enemy. Triple jump, strong attacks, fast attacks, rolling away, magic powers activated in the same manner, and quick time events for special kills that have the buttons displayed in the exact same locations as God of War. Totally not the fan boy in me talking either. It is a God of War clone with just new clothes.

Going even further, they even ripped off other elements from the new game as well. You can even mount larger demons and force them to attack other smaller ones by stabbing them to move. Even the health and mana bins are the same, hold a trigger button while you wait for it to react and fill your health/mana bars. Oh, and those bars, right on top of a sprite version of your main weapon. Even the HUD is the same.

Given all of that though, surprisingly, I am still crazy interested in this game. For the story and visuals. The storytelling style used as well as what was shown is enough to make it it's own game, at least as of right now. It may be God of War with a Christian theme to it, but the story of this is what is going to suck everyone in. That's what I think at least. I guess having a gameplay system that we are all use to will just make it that much easier to enjoy what is going on in the story.

One final note before I let you on to the pretty stuff. Some of you might have heard that there was a protest out at E3 about this game. Jesus people spouting off on how "Hell is not a video game" and the like. If not, it did happen there. It was all the buzz on the second day of the event. Well on the Friday after, it was found that it was a stunt paid for by EA to hype the game. A ballsy move in my opinion. Something I think will hurt them even more in the end than help.

Why? Because this will just stir the real Jesus people to move in force against the industry and not just the game. They pretty much used Christianity as a marketing tool. Can you imagine how that is going to go over once it works it's way to the Jesus people's ears? Not from Mel Gibson as well. Mel being the only person allowed to use the religion to make money extremely publicly. We'll see I guess.
