Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Combat System Is Shaping Up Well

Hellblade

Another developer diary for Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has been released and it shows us just how far the Hellblade combat system has progressed

It was promised and now here it is as we get to see where the combat system of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has finally made it to. It looked promising from what Ninja Theory had already shown in the most recent developer diaries but now we get to see it a bit more in action. Of course this isn't the final state of Hellblade's combat but it is our first solid look at it in motion and with all of the detail that has been put into it.

I'll shut up for now and let you dig right into it all and see for yourself. Of course my opinions and thoughts will be just past all of that.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice — Combat Revisited

So it looks like Ninja Theory has gone a very Dark Souls or Bloodborn path as it comes to Hellblade here. At least that is how it all looks to me from the above video. It could also be akin to the heavy attack system they used in Heavenly Sword too. If anything though it does look like it has the "heft" and realism that would be associated with the character to not make Senua look and feel like a super hero. It is a fantasy world and all but they are keeping it grounded and it is paying off.

I am also digging the way the dodging and positioning look to be working here in Hellblade as well. I hope it doesn't devolve into a spinning out of the way extravaganza as that move doesn't work as well in the real world as it does here but it can be effective every now and then. It also does beg the question on the game's AI too. Will they learn and "correct" themselves after so many missed attacks or will they always be "canned." That last dodge and attack move where the enemy has a huge wind up to miss in particular sparked that thought.

Of course there is still a lot of time for things to get polished up and this is all early footage of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice so those issues may be addressed already. At least if they still plan on the release to be this year still. I'd venture a guess so as these videos are probably cut and being processed for a few weeks before we see them and a lot can be done in that amount of time; even with a small team as they have working on Hellblade currently.

What do you think about Hellblade's combat system here? Do you see the similarities that I do or am I full of it? Do you think that the team will get the enemies to function just as we do through their AI? Let us know and discuss in the comments below.
