E3 2011 Impressions: XCOM
by Brian Bentley [ Thursday, 16th of June 2011 - 02:13 PM ]
At last year’s E3, when I saw XCOM, I was loving the environments, the time period and the promise of strategic elements. What I was iffy on was the generic-feeling action game play. A year has passed and I walked into the 2K Games booth to see what progress 2K Marin has made on this re-imaging of the beloved franchise. This year the focus of the demonstration was the strategic aspects of combat in the field and the importance of decisions made through the course of the game. Everything is a factor – from choosing your mission, to who accompanies you on the mission, to how you tackle each scenario you encounter in the field. Read More...

E3 2011 Impressions: Tomb Raider
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Tuesday, 14th of June 2011 - 12:11 PM ]
If there is one franchise that feels like it has been milked to death, it would be Tomb Raider. The true definition that sex sells in gaming. So it would be very little surprise that Eidos would look into remaking such a beloved franchise for more money. Only from what we got to see at E3, I would not put it in the normal "remake for money" category just yet. This new Tomb Raider looks like it is going to do for this franchise what Batman Begins did for the Batman film franchise. It is darker. Read More...

E3 2011 Impressions: Torchlight II
by Brian Bentley [ Monday, 13th of June 2011 - 07:34 PM ]
When I stumbled upon Torchlight during 2009’s E3, I knew I had found something special. Of all the games I came away wowed by during that show, Torchlight was definitely one that stood out in my mind after the buzz wore off. Fast forward to 2011, as Runic Games attempts to make a repeat performance at E3 with Torchlight II. At first glance, you will feel a familiarity with Torchlight II. The art style hasn't changed dramatically, though they seemed to have spruced up some of the textures. Read More...

E3 2011 Impressions: BioShock Infinite
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Monday, 13th of June 2011 - 05:34 PM ]
Hidden deep in the back of the 2K Games booth in the South Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center, we were led into a room that looked like an old hunter's club room - Animal heads on the walls, old fashioned lamps lighting the room and filled wall to wall with plush leather couches. It was as close to an opening in reality to take a step into Columbia (where Bioshock Infinite takes place) as I could imagine without Elizabeth opening a tear and pulling us through. Before I get into the bulk of the game footage we were shown, which consisted mostly of sky rail combat, let me catch some of you up on the story that is the lead up as well as the background. This is for those just now finding interest in the game. Read More...

Dungeons and Dragons - Daggerdale Review
by Corey Dockendorf [ Friday, 10th of June 2011 - 05:14 PM ]
I've been waiting along time for a new Dungeons and Dragons game to hit store shelves. My wish was finally granted with Atari and Bedlam Games release of Daggerdale.  A D&D 4th edition title that boasted 4 player online play, hours of dungeons and a return to the Forgotten Realms and the world of Faerun in epic proportions.  Well, it looks like Bedlam and Atari really missed the mark on this one - by a longshot. We will begin our story with the challenges faced simply to acquire a copy of the game, I went to 4 different stores only to be told that it was only available on the Xbox Marketplace for download. Kingdom of Amalur E3 Gameplay Trailer
by Corey Dockendorf [ Thursday, 9th of June 2011 - 02:35 AM ]
With some of the biggest names in the realm of high fantasy, and judging by the latest E3 trailer, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is not going to disappoint. Magic, rebirth, hack n' slash combat, this trailer does it all and for the first time we get a little background on the storyline. It's a really great look at the extensive world created by R.A. Salvatore and the team at 38 Studios. Read More...

Star Wars: The Old Republic E3 Intro Cinematic
by Corey Dockendorf [ Wednesday, 8th of June 2011 - 01:15 AM ]
Okay, that's it. If I have to watch one more cinematic teaser for Star Wars: The Old Republic, I'm gonna scream. Honestly, these things are so awesome, it's almost like a feature length film. The latest one released at E3 this year has me torn. I'm no longer sure if I want to be a Jedi or a Sith - and for good reason. I'm just going to sit in a dark room and watch all these cinematics in a row until the game comes out. Seriously though, I was hoping for more gameplay at E3, but this will do. Read More...

Batman: Arkham City Just Got Sexier
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Tuesday, 7th of June 2011 - 02:51 AM ]
So it looks like the rumor about NOT being able to play as Catwoman in Batman: Arkham City is now busted. Submitted for your consumption, I give you a look at a bit of the game play as Catwoman in Batman: Arkham City. Straight from the horse's mouth, A.K.A. Rocksteady, to our eyes. Yes, I know that doesn't make visual sense, but just go with it. It doesn't show any form of Co-Op which leads me to believe that she is either going to have a small portion of the game set up like The Joker did in Arkham Asylum. It may be some extra missions, after game missions added to the game, or it could be similar but added into the main story arc of the game. Read More...

Alice Is Launched Into That Returning Madness
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Sunday, 5th of June 2011 - 12:13 AM ]
Kind of weird that we are just under two weeks away from Alice: Madness Returns hitting shelves and we are getting a Launch Trailer. Not that it isn't appreciated, but I would expect a bit more hyping and teasing from EA before getting what is usually considered the last trailer before DLC type trailers. That is their usual motive when it comes to their PR department isn't it? Or is it only with games that are probably not going to do so well? Read More...

Storytelling Time In The Secret World
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Friday, 3rd of June 2011 - 03:49 PM ]
It may be coming a lot slower that I would want, but here comes quite a bit more on what is going on with The Secret World. Well at least as it goes with the missions and stories being told in the game. The below developer's diary goes over both those categories more than I will here, but I'll at least break it down for you a bit. Just as the tag line for the game says, "Everything Is True." Think about how the real world would be if every myth, story, legend or folk story were 100% true and not just based on something. Read More...

Alice Shows How The Madness Turned Into Hysteria
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Friday, 27th of May 2011 - 07:06 PM ]
It has been a while since I've played the original Alice but I really don't remember the combat to be as fast paced as the below clip for Alice Madness Returns shows. Not that I will complain because I remember that being an issue when I first played the original. It just seems like they twisted every part of the original just as much as the mind of Alice in the first place. Hmm… Maybe that is why… Or it could just be to appease the console players out there. Continuing down that rabbit hole, another interesting addition the game play looks to be the Hysteria mode. Read More...

See How Dead Island Is Going To Handle
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Wednesday, 25th of May 2011 - 01:13 PM ]
So I thought the last video for Dead Island was going to be it before E3. Don't want to show off everything before the major convention now would we? But it would seem that the developers wanted to give Game Trailers a bit more to show off before their big E3 push. The video can be seen below. Before you move off to the video though, I'd like to make my normal comments. So bare with me. Or ignore these words and watch the clip. Read More...

Review: Brink
by Corey Dockendorf [ Monday, 23rd of May 2011 - 12:59 PM ]
Brink is a fast paced, multi-faceted first person shooter, and brought to us by Splash Damage and Bethesda Softworks. With its intuitive free-running style game play, and great stylized graphics, is it enough to keep this title from the Brink of extinction? Brink is set in the near future, where two factions battle for control of a floating city known as the ARK. The Security and The Resistance are plagued with overpopulation and poverty, and have decided that the ARK is not big enough for the both of them. There is a story line for each faction and sixteen missions total in the campaign. Read More...

Dead Island Really Showing How Paradise Can Go Wrong
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Thursday, 19th of May 2011 - 01:57 PM ]
So the original trailer for the game made a huge splash and so did the exclusive behind closed doors showcasing, but for the most part it has been CGI or mostly words showing/describing how Dead Island will handle. While this is still a little bit of the case, we can glean a little more from the below screen shots and new trailer for the game. In fact some of the action shots show quite a bit that can be guessed at. The trailer on the other hand is not as informative, but it does hold a different view of the game world. Read More...

Batman Takes On FPS In Gotham City Impostors
by David 'Hades' Becker [ Tuesday, 17th of May 2011 - 01:27 PM ]
Here is where that pesky Batman: Arkham City multiplayer rumor got its foundation, well at least that is what I speculate. It looks like just before we get the new Arkham game we are getting Gotham City Imposters. Sounds like a weird Batman tribute white rapper band, but it is a new FPS from Monolith Productions and Warner Bros. Interactive. Wait a second. Read More...
