PETA-mon Or Pokémon Black & Blue

They’ve created parody games before, including Cooking Mamma: Mamma Kills Animals, Super Tofu Boy, and Mario Kills Tanooki. Finally, 16 years after their initial release, PETA is taking a swing at Pokémon.

Their latest game, coinciding with the release of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, is Pokémon Black and Blue.

The player takes control of Pikachu, recently escaped from captivity, as it fights past pokémon trainers to get to freedom. Your final battle is with Ash himself. Along the way your party will include Tepig, Snivy, and Oshawott.

As far as parodies go, this is actually pretty good. The game play itself is much like a real Pokémon game, with each pokémon getting four moves and taking turns to attack. Each pokémon also get’s two PETA moves, whether it is “Group Hug,” “Petition,” or “Education.” These function like the standard moves, lowering statuses, giving buffs, or doing damage. Interestingly enough, you can still zap the trainers to your heart's content with Thunder Shock. I guess PETA has no problem with violence against their fellow man, as long as animals aren't involved.

The thing that makes it a PETA game however is the style. All the pokémon are maimed in some way, with bandages, blood, and missing pieces. The trainers are covered in the blood of pokémon and look absolutely mental. Ash looks more like a demented ringleader than the plucky kid we know for the show. Most of you will probably want to avoid the dialogue as it is pointed and atrociously written.

Is it creative? Sure. Is it fun? Not really. And do yourself a favor and avoid the video reward they offer you. Just trust me.
