Review: Poker Night At The Inventory

The game starts in front of a door where you head down a secret elevator leading to an exclusive club: "The Inventory." Here you are greeted by the host who escorts you to a table in the back room for a poker tournament with The Heavy from Team Fortress 2, Strong Bad (nuff said), Tycho from Penny Arcade and Max from Sam&Max. The game is no-limit Texas Hold 'Em with a $10,000 buy-in. Once everyone is ready to play, the hand is dealt and the game is afoot. There are no extra game modes (read: no multiplayer), though you can adjust the difficulty from easy to hard.

Let me start by saying this is not meant to be a serious Poker game. If you are buying this for that reason, you will be severely disappointed. If you ARE buying it because you are a fan of Telltale's work, or you want to unlock the Team Fortress 2 items, then this game is for you. The game is a short night of entertainment. The humorous banter gets old and repetitive and is really only good for an hour or two. You'll find yourself quickly clicking through the cut-scenes because you want to actually play the game rather than listen to the comments you've already heard before.

In my first game against these guys I pretty much knocked everyone out in the first 10 minutes. Your winnings do not carry-over from game to game; you start with a fresh $10 grand every tournament. On the normal difficulty setting, these guys are doing everything they can to throw you off - going all in on terrible hands, trying to bluff you out, etc. There really isn't much of a challenge. Hard mode, on the other hand, has your opponents a bit more focused and the game adds more of the challenge found in most stand alone poker games. It's like playing the portable Texas Hold 'Em games, except with witty commentary.

Overall, if you're a Poker fan this is not the game for you and if you're not familiar with the characters, this is really not the game for you. This is Telltale Games fan service - pitting you against familiar faces and seeing how they would get along in a "high stakes" situation. It's a quaint game, but I am really surprised that it was launched on Steam and not on a mobile platform like the iPad or Android. This game could have had so much potential in the mobile market, I feel it was a waste to put it on Steam's network. Bottom line: if you want some Team Fortress 2 unlock-able swag or really are a fan of Tycho from Penny Arcade, pick it up for $5. Otherwise wait till someone gets it for you as a stocking stuffer.
