Comic Con Day 1: Getting The Shaft

Armed with the knowledge of some of these announcements, I made off for their booths.

Now, I know that Comic Con is for the fans. I get that. Shit, I was attending as a fan before I got my shiny media status from this site. But what I don't get is how a company or PR for a company can bypass not only fans, but press that are fans for their own lack of caring. I'm looking at you Capcom, Activision, Sony, XBox and Namco. Don't try to hide it either.

During the big announcements you were all fun and games. Handing out swag, interacting with everyone, excitedly talking about what you were demonstrating and generally showing you care about your fans. Then, when the one-on-one happens - after your grand showing - the "Why Are You Talking To Me?" attitude seeped out. That is, unless you were one of the bigger, bull-shittier media outlets or names.

At each one of these companies I approached to ask not only fan questions, but technical questions. First, with the appearance of a general con-goer, then by flashing my media pass. Both times getting a person, someone I interacted with at E3, that would either ignore my question and walk away and sit down on their phone or answer one question and then walk over to bullshit with other booth workers. That's right, they not only gave the persona of not caring about a fan asking questions, but also a member of the media - albeit a small member, but still a member.

I can understand if you are busy and have to handle many other things. I truly can. But I am also great at people-watching and walking away from a fan or member of the media to take a picture with your booth's performer - who is there all week - does not justify being busy. Just shows a lack of caring when it comes to those who fuel your company with money.

This is quite literally how the entire day went for me at the booths for the companies listed above. Also for a few others I witnessed at the booths as well. Of course, this only applies to those that didn't have breasts and dressed based on how severe their "daddy issues" are. This is not the last time this will be brought up mind you.

I would like to follow up though, with the company that did get things right for their fans. I applaud EA on this day. Even though they didn't have a major booth set up for anything other than Medal of Honor or Rock Band 3, the space they rented out again across the street and the people they had working the area knew this was all for the fans. Hell I got treated much better before they found out I was there as a member of the press. Giving out little tidbits and secrets about Dead Space 2 and Dragon Age 2 that later I was told I could not report on. For that, I applaud EA for understanding what it is still all about.

Stay tuned for more of the insanity that came with Day 2.
