Iron Man 2: Beneath The Armor

In any instance, I was able to join up on a conference call with Dean Martinetti, the game’s producer, and Mike McHale, the game's Development Director. Where we got to throw out our questions about the game as well as try to gauge on why we or anyone should pick up another film based game. Especially since the last one in this franchise was such a piss-poor adaptation. Something they even admit to being crap due to the needs to pump it out with the film's release.

If you don't want to listen to the hour and eight minute call, which is below, let me some up some of the interesting facts and tidbits to possibly sell you on getting the Iron Man 2 film game.

Developer's Conference Call

The first, and I would say major point, is that it is not a game that follows the movie or adds in parts that were cut from the film. It is a game based on the world created from the film with an original story just for the game. Which is nice since they got the comic writer to do most of the script for the game. This also doesn't force players to have to play through things they have already experienced in the film, which I hate. It's like playing a game you watched someone else do perfectly the first time. I just wish they would have tipped a bit more of the hat on the overall new story.

Next up, gameplay features and controls. While not very descriptive, both guys were big on letting us know that the controls and movement between gameplay modes is much smother. With great improvements on the fight to flight switch. No longer will there be flying face first into the ground.

Also with the updated features, highly destructible environments and buildings. Extremely highly destructible from their descriptions as well. Like having enemies just walk through a building after you instead of trying to find a "safer" path around, and we are not talking on set path events like the Nemesis from RE3. We are talking about being able to collapse a building on enemies at any time.

Final last fun fact is that you will be able to play as either Iron Man or War Machine through out the entire 7 to 11 hours of gameplay. Well outside of two select missions that force you to play as one or the other for that mission alone. Outside of that you can either be the brute force and destroy everything, War Machine or the agile and precise Iron Man. Both with their own advantages and drawbacks.

There were a few things brought up that were kind of not so good to hear though. Like the first that could make people iffy on picking up the title; The fact that they were forced, like before, to meet the film's release date as a dead line. Something that both Dean and Mike were not to happy about, and lead to clipping things out of the game and not being able to perfect things. Which we all knew would happen.

Another weird thing, which could lead to some awfulness for the game, is that they were only able to secure Samuel Jackson and Don Cheadle as far as voice acting. They did get the guy who voiced Iron Man in the animated shows, but it's just not right when based on the live action film. I feel it will loose a sense of immersion into the story not hearing Robert Downey or Mickey Rourke. But actor's schedules can be a bitch, paraphrased from the guys.

For more, listen to the call above. There was much more that I didn't touch on here. Also, for suffering through my words here, here is a nice little bonus cookie. A new trailer featuring War Machine's debut into the video game world.
