Holodeck Coming Soon

We've all seen "3D" films and the basic version of holograms before, unless you are Milla Jovovich of course. We have seen the wonders of depth given to us through stereoscopic glasses and other forms of that technology. Which in turn has us think forward to get something like the Holodecks out of Star Trek. Something that would be a gamers dream to play in. Something that looked to be many many decades away. Well that is until now.

Below you will see a video clip of a new interactive method that is the closest we have to tactile holograms and interaction with a game world. All using a few WiiMotes to track the position of the human component of the interaction. With those in place and the tried and true optical illusion to make a 3D object come into a real would and an Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display the whole deal is finalized and made into something really interesting.

In case you don't know, an Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display is a device that these University of Tokyo scientists put together for SIGGRAPH this year. What it does is shoot a focused wave of sound that is not audible to the human ear. Which is how they add the sensation of touch to the whole thing. Really interesting stuff to look at and get one excited about the future of things. Much better than the force feedback vests in my opinion.

Good luck to you guys with this tech and I hope it all works. Bring on the future!
